This requires more than just a mass protest. If Assange is forced through the front door of the embassy, there should be thousands to buffer him from the police. A number so significant, that UK police would be overwhelmed, and think twice about using the brutal tactics usually demanded during such events. Sheer weight of numbers to escort him to an embassy that will provide genuine asylum.

Unfortunately this won't be the Australian embassy. Our Israel and US first foreign minister Julie Bishop would hand him over to the US in a heartbeat. Sad to say that public backlash here in Australia would be negligible. Even now there is nether a murmur in the local mainstream media about this development.
