Snake {Original poem}
Snake
I was supposed to agree
bonding exercise
code for
I like you best.
Ever crap at girl code
I stupidly contradicted
shooting off compliments
like self-guided missiles
safer to dart a knife between splayed fingers
blind drunk.
My best friend weeded me
confusing
and your words lost to a season
but years later
spoken by divine offspring
pretty damn specific words
attributed to me!
You thought me gossip
thought I would deliver your venom
inject it straight into her brain
where she replays everything
on loop.
Afraid of hate
afraid of being stripped bare
and paraded
you slithered off
to seductively brush back her curls
and whisper guileless lies.
Never!
Never would I spread your poison
she was fragile enough!
Childhood betrayed by parents
both
outward all slinky
big hair and Cleopatra eyes
inward
fist-eyed little match girl
stooped in rags over a minuscule naked flame
hand-cupped from the wind and driving rain.
Gift wrapped
re-labelled
green-eyed rancour
slowly fogging deeds of love
snuffing out trust
returning her to dark solitude
lone star to light a paleolithic sky.
