"Drowning" Acrylic on Canvas 36X36

in #kr-art8 years ago (edited)

Hello, my fellow Steemians :) This is carrotcake.

At some point of my life, I constantly felt like drowning.
Panic attack, eating disorder and depression were part of my everyday life.
The best hour of my day was at night when I tucked myself into bed, wishing that morning would never come.
Morning was a disaster because I would vomit right after I woke up. (Puking is not the best way to start the day, coffee and bagel are)

Few years ago, one of my high school friend living in the East Coast contacted me, asking if I could paint three paintings for him so he can hang them on the wall in his living room. It was the time when panic attacks were becoming more frequent and started to happen not only at night but also during the day. And it was the time when I stopped painting more than 3 years.

It was a pleasant surprise that he contacted me because we haven't talked for a long time after high school and he was one of the few people I actually spoked to back then.

I bought the supplies and started sketching out ideas and after a month since his commission, I completed the first one of the three paintings.

He didn't ask for specific imagery so I enjoyed my freedom of painting whatever I wanted to, and here it is. The drowned man sitting on a bench in his apartment with koi fishes.

I still don't know the nature of his sudden art commission because it didn't really make sense to me. First of all, we never really kept in touch since I moved to California. Also, the shipping which he paid was pretty expensive because these were large paintings. I am the type of person who goes directly to IKEA If I want to buy something to hang on the wall. If I don't find anything decent in IKEA, my second option of be Joanne's or Michael's. My point is that he could have just gone to an art gallery and bought something there for the same amount of money he paid to me.
Secondly and most importantly, I wasn't even a good artist back then. Not that I am saying I am a great artist now but to be honest, I was horrible at painting and it kind of shows.

But who knows? maybe he liked my painting genuinely and was willing to go through all those hassles.
Maybe I should have just asked him directly, but I never did. He never said.

Woff, woff!

Hello @carrotcake, Nice to meet you!

I'm a guide dog living in KR community. I can see that you want to contribute to KR community and communicate with other Korean Steemians. I really appreciate it and I'd be more than happy to help.

KR tag is used mainly by Koreans, but we give warm welcome to anyone who wish to use it. I'm here to give you some advice so that your post can be viewed by many more Koreans. I'm a guide dog after all and that's what I do!

Tips:

  • If you're not comfortable to write in Korean, I highly recommend you write your post in English rather than using Google Translate.
Unfortunately, Google Translate is terrible at translating English into Korean. You may think you wrote in perfect Korean, but what KR Steemians read is gibberish. Sorry, even Koreans can't understand your post written in Google-Translated Korean.
  • So, here's what might happen afterward. Your Google-Translated post might be mistaken as a spam so that whales could downvote your post. Yikes! I hope that wouldn't happen to you.
  • If your post is not relevant to Korea, not even vaguely, but you still use KR tag, Whales could think it as a spam and downvote your post. Double yikes!
  • If your post is somebody else's work(that is, plagiarism), then you'll definitely get downvotes.
  • If you keep abusing tags, you may be considered as a spammer. It may result to put you into the blacklist. Oops!

I sincerely hope that you enjoy Steemit without getting downvotes. Because Steemit is a wonderful place. See? Korean Steemians are kind enough to raise a guide dog(that's me) to help you!

Woff, woff! 🐶

Cheer Up!

I love this. Thanks for opening up about the troubles you've been experiencing in your life. I can relate to many of those challenges myself - especially anxiety and depression. Your depiction of that drowning feeling is really powerful. You are too hard on yourself about your painting abilities, because I would say without a doubt that you are an extremely talented painter. The way you create the sense of being under water with the fade between the blue of the water and the browns of the room is masterfully done. And I love the angled perspective.

It's always a challenge for me to share my personal feelings and emotions with other people, so I never do. But I am glad I shared this painting and opened up. I felt like drowning deeper and deeper for years but suddenly it stopped.. after I adopted my cat :)
And yes, I have to agree that I am too hard on myself sometimes ^^;
