DJI Mavic Air - Thoughts After 2 Days + Flight Footage

After being interested in drones for a couple of years I finally decided to take the plunge this week, by investing in a new DJI Mavic Air. This drone has only just come out, and I was really impressed by everything I’d seen and read online about it. It’s small, very small and fits easily into a small bag along with the controller and spare batteries. In fact, the drone itself is only about the size of a smartphone in terms of height and width. As soon as I opened it I was immediately impressed by how well designed it was. All the parts fit together brilliantly and I could tell a great deal of thought and expertise had gone into the process of creating it.

Unboxing it and going through the setup process was actually kind of futuristic, I know it sounds silly to say but that’s how it felt! After the initial setup was complete I took it for it’s maiden flight. I started off with beginner mode which limits the distance the drone could fly away to 30 metres. This seemed further than I imagined, but allowed an extra level of control to help stop the drone getting lost. It’s surprisingly simple to operate and the auto land and take off features are handy. I’m sure after a couple more flights I will feel more confident.

There are a number of other features left to try. These include the active track function which I’m hoping to use to get some cool cycling shots in the summer. There is also Boomerang (where the drone circles you) and Asteroid, which just looks insane. I’m looking forward to trying these out, and also finding some new places to fly. I’m hoping to use this to create more Dtube content in the future.

I used my own music for the video. My artist name is The Millionth Mile Deep, but I’m yet to finalise my album and distribute it.

I've been looking at this bad boy for a while. Nice to see some more people's take on it. May splurge on the big boy, but this one seems so handy and travel ready. And the image quality is pretty gosh darn solid.

Yeh absolutely and I'm not really sure that the Mavic Pro has many advantages over the Air except for maybe the slightly longer battery life.

I thinl out of camera the image quality is a little higher too. Honestly stuff that could probably just be tuned up in post though. I've just been watching out of camera comparisons.

I’ve been getting more and more interested in drones lately, after seeing your footage, I’m even more tempted to make the plunge!
I love how smooth the video is here, haven’t heard of that drone yet but I’m defineitly going to be looking into it, especially if it’s that portable!
I’ll be following your progress with it, looking forward to picking your brain about it sometime.
Great work, and great music as well

Thanks Tim! Yeh you should definitely look into it. I tried out some of the more advanced modes yesterday which were really cool and easy to use. I'm hoping to take it to the coast this weekend and give it a proper run out up there without many obstacles around.

I have been on the fence for awhile regarding a drone. I want mine to be able to film action sports, so I am leaning towards the second iteration of the new Skydio autonomous model. Check it out dude, pretty sweet!

Wow that looks impressive! Could definitely help you make some cool content for Dtube

I've flown the normal mavic, as well as the phantom 3p. The air looks like a great package, you're not the first steemian I've seen who's happy with their new purchase.

Begging for up votes is not an effective strategy on Steemit, if you'd actually engaged with my post in a meaningful way I would have given you an up vote
