Becoming Successful in the field of Marketing and Sales... Steps on how to excel

Today am deviating a bit from what I am popularly known for on this platform. If you have been following me, I have stated my job as a sales rep in two or three post. Many believe the marketing/ sales job is something very tedious and stressful because of what they go through trying to satisfy the needs of customer and meeting up with company target. To be realistic they are not easy jobs but you can make it easy following the steps that you will come across in the post. I won’t sugarcoat anything for you readers. The two jobs are different but are linked to each other and also have similar aim of boosting the company Revenue.

I believe this post should be able to give you what you need to become a very successful marketer/sales representative. In the World today, marketing and sales representative job have been the most available job for the youth but only few have been successful in the field. Have you ever asked what their secrets are and how they became successful?

STEP #1

ASK YOURSELF IF YOU REALLY WANT THE JOB :
When going into any of these two jobs, the first thing you have to do is to ask yourself if you are really ready to work. After meeting a lot of young marketer and sales representative, they tell you they are just doing the job because they don’t want to sit at home.

Many don’t know that not having passion for whatever you are doing is like planting a seed on a rock and you expect it to grow. Truly the situation of the country is hard and companies aren’t paying as they should but believe no company will let go a very competent marketer and will do anything to retain your service. Most times we belittle the job to be nothing but it s something because as a marketer or sales rep, you play a vital role in the growth of every brand or company you work with.

Going to the top isn’t just something you start and end in day, it s a gradual process. In my case, I see my job as a career thing, something I can work and build to become great and famous in the field.

My boss once told me he was once a driver selling for a brand but when the company saw his effort, he rose from a driver to a sales partner within a short and unexpected time. Many do the job with a nonchalant attitude because they are just doing it not to be idle but the mistake we make is that we have failed to know the company or brand is keeping our record, they are watching every single progress we are making on the field and definitely you will be rewarded someday.

So any one doing any of these two jobs must love the job, I mean you must compulsorily have a true passion for the job if you must succeed.

Step #2
GET TO KNOW YOUR BRAND OR COMPANY (PRODUCT) VERY WELL:
Knowing about your Company means a lot to every market or sales person. Many will ask, what do I need to know?

The mission of the company

A company mission statement defines what the company or brand is and why it exists.

The mission statement will guide you on who your primary customers are.
It helps you identify the products or service of the brand or the company.
It helps you know the aim and objective of the brand/company.
It tells you more about the geographical area the company operates

Available resources for you as a marketer or sales person.
As a marketer you should know and understand the available resources provided for you to work effectively.

Company history
This is also important for not only marketers/ sales partner but every staff of a company. The company standard and values are vital points of history you should know so you can know what standard you have to set for yourself. Anything below the company standard can definitely dent your image and company/ brand image.

Company/brand selling and marketing strategy.
Every company has developed a strategy on how their things are done. They have their ways of promoting their brand/company and take their company/brand to the next level. So you should learn the strategies and fit into the market perfectly.
It is not possible as a marketer or sales person to tell other people about a product you don’t know about. As a marketer you must know every detail of your BRAND OR PRODUCT so you can be able to talk to people about the product so that they can develop interest in the product.

Ask questions and think of the challenges you can encounter on the field. It is a very simple illustration, it will be very difficult for a student who doesn’t understand a subject to get an outstanding result in that subject.

Step #3

GET TO KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS :
You might be asking deep down in you, how many things do I need to know? A marketer or sales person that fails to know the people in his or her targeted market is close to failure.

Customers are very important to you due to your type of job, because they will determine how far you have worked, so not knowing them is a great disaster. How do you get to know your customers?

Before going into that in detail, there are things you should know:

Having a good customer relationship is very important if you really want to know your customer ,You must have a fine and smooth interaction with people in your designated market/area, don’t be surprise the customer have taste for people also.

Your appearance speaks a lot about you, many dress as they please because it's a
marketing/sales job. It s very wrong, you should look decent and attractive because you represent an image of your brand anywhere you are. Appear in such a way that customers won’t be able to turn you down when you start a conversation with them.

Exchanging pleasantries, appreciating and showing respect goes a long way in the field of marketing /sales job, every customer wants it no matter how small they are.
If possible always appear branded

Back on getting to know your customers: it will be a very quick step

Firstly you have to know your existing customer in your designated area/market
collect every possible data on every existing customer
try to know their common interest as a customer

With these results you can easily know the people who you can approach to tell about your product. You can map out people who are likely to make purchase and start something great with you.

In other to do this, there are various means you can use but I prefer a direct survey because you meet with customers and interact with them directly.
