B.C. In the 2nd millennium, Babylonians, Chinese and Egyptians were harvesting crops according to the movements of the Sun and the Moon. Astronomy has made great progress with Ptoleme's work in the ancient Greek astronomy. Translated into Arabic, Almagest remained the most important source for astronomers for 1,400 years. Copernicus opposed the theory of the Sun, the Moon, and other planets that acknowledged that they were spinning around the Earth. He said the sun was in the center and that the planets were spinning around the sun. Newton, Kepler, Galileo have made important contributions to the progress of astronomy science. Today, the area of the observational astronomy has been further expanded by the use of radio and X-ray telescopes.

Eski Yunan astronomisinde Ptoleme'nin çalışmalarıyla büyük ilerleme gösterdi, Arapçaya çevrilen Almagest adlı eseri 1.400 yıl boyunca gökbilimciler için en önemli kaynak olarak kaldı. Copernicus, Güneş, Ay ve tüm gezegenlerin birer fener gibi dünyanın etrafında döndüklerini kabul eden eski teoriye karşı çıkıp güneşin gezegen sisteminin merkezinde hareketsiz durduğunu ileri sürdü. Newton, Kepler, Galile astronomi biliminin ilerlemesine çok önemli katkılarda bulunmuşlardır. Günümüzde ise gözlemsel astronominin alanı, radyo ve X işın teleskoplarının kullanılmasıyla daha da genişledi.
