Gloomhaven
Our group ready for our first battle!
Yesterday we cracked open a new game called Gloomhaven. It is a 4 player co-op dungeon crawling legacy game. After our successful adventure through Pandemic Legacy Season 2, we wasted no time jumping into our next legacy game. So far this seems quite a bit different than Pandemic Legacy but that was kind of expected since it's almost an entirely different genre.
We each began by choosing a class based purely on class names. Our choices were Scoundrel, Tinkerer, Spell Weaver, Crag Heart, Brute & Mind Thief. I choose Crag Heart, which seems like it's going to be a slow tanky dps type character, while the rest of my party went with Tinkerer, Scoundrel & Spell Weaver.
Upon choosing a class we each got to open a small box that contained everything needed for our characters. We each got a character mat, a deck of class abilities, a deck of attack modifiers, a character sheet and a mini for our class. Having no idea how to play the game, all this material seemed a bit intimidating.
The rule book was thick and, in true board game, not overly helpful. Thankfully we found a good tutorial that helped us to learn the rules and get setup for our first game.
The general premise of the game is that we are a group of mercenaries from Gloomhaven. Our current goal in the game is simply making money to survive. Each character also has a personal quest which serves as their own goal in the game. Once a character completes their personal quest they get retired from the game, unlocking new classes and content within the game. We haven't got that far yet so not totally sure how all of that will work but it seems like an interesting progression mechanic.
We ran out of time before completing our first scenario but the game seems very fun so far and I'm interested to see how the game develops moving forward. I'm ready to bash some skulls and loot some treasure!
Gloomhaven seems very big and intimidating to me. Even good reviews can't change that.
I recently played Descent 2E (with the Smartphone App) again, and was reminded why it was sitting in my cupboard untouched for 6 months.
The instructions and packaging don't help reduce the intimidation. Was a bit confusing getting started with the combat but once we got into it, everything became clearer. I just wish lots of games simplified the instructions to help get you playing with less headaches.
Awesome....this is chess upgraded lol @bwar
I would really love to play
It's apparently a super high rated game so I'm pretty excited to dig into it.
