Dungeons & Backstories
No D&D this week since it is Thanksgiving here this weekend. So I thought I would share with you my characters backstory for my current campaign. It's not too in-depth but I think it gives you a good idea about what my character is. He's a Human Warlock (with one level of Fighter), he is 12 and a half years old, stands at 5 feet tall with dark hair and eyes.
Aether is a strange thing. Most people don’t give it a second thought, others devote their entire lives to it. But once it’s truly touched you it’s hard to erase it from your mind.
The boy’s first memory is being surrounded by a room of Aether. The room had no doors or windows and his interaction with other beings were few and far between. Whenever he would ask someone why he was there he’d get the same generic response “It’s for you own good” they’d say with a side smile directed at him.
Isolation is a strange thing. It changes a man slowly and irreversibly. Most develop coping mechanism, and the boy was no exception. To help occupy his time he created an imaginary friend. They talked about many things, the regions of Emeeri, the Brotherhood, his friend taught him new languages and even helped him train his body in the basics of combat.
Their most common conversation revolved around the Aether and escaping their prison. They became obsessed with it over the years testing different ways to manipulate the room around them. They got better at it over time but it never seemed like they made much progress in actually escaping. Eventually they began to give up hope.
One day as the boy, now a man, lay in his cell dozing off after his usual training routine, he felt the Aether begin to change around him. To the boy it felt like time itself changed before his eyes. He saw strange images within the Aether, things that could have been, things yet to come, the boy watched in awe as he realized everything he saw came from his eyes but also the his of his friend. He he watched the images he was drawn to one that showed him travelling through the Aether. He followed the image and he soon began travelling through the Aether himself, escaping from his prison. His friend excitedly encouraged the boy onwards. He directed the boy and guided him out of the Aether onto, for the first time the boy could remember, solid ground.
“This land is called Burij my friend”
“I know replied the boy” even having never been here he knew because his friend knew. Both of them had a slight shiver at the thought.
“We must seek revenge for what they did to us” his friend said, “The Brotherhood controls the Aether, I don’t think they were our captors but they might know who would have the power to hold us their. There is an outpost to the east go there and join their ranks. It might take some time but they’ll have the answers we seek. You’ve already seen this in the Aether, you know it true.”
The boy simply nodded in reply as he began walking towards the outpost. After a few miles they arrived and the boy headed in and asked to be pointed towards a recruiter. As he approached the recruiter gave him an unapproving glare.
“What do you want?” Asked the recruiter roughly.
“I wish to join the Brotherhood” Said the boy matter of factly.
“We don’t take riff-raff off the streets, do you have any training?”
“Just what I’ve taught myself”
The recruiter laughs softly to himself. “We aren’t here to train young men from scratch, come back when you have some real training”
The boy ignored the recruiter for a minute and walked over to the rack of weapons behind him. Even though he had never seen any of them before he knew what each weapon was and how to use it. He reached one towards the weapon he always imagined himself holding during his training in the cell. AS he grabbed the weapon he felt a hand on his shoulder. “Put it down” The recruiter said firmly.
“Test me.” The boy said to the recruiter. “If I fail I will at least leave with the knowledge of what it takes to be a member.”
A smile grin rose across the recruiters face, “Fine if you insist a lesson will be taught. You can see what a real recruit who’s trained and battled his entire life is capable of. Mergin!” He called out and a Triton quickly came running over. “Grab a weapon and spar with this man” Mergin eagerly scooped up a weapon and before he thought the boy was ready he attacked. As Mergin lunged towards the boy he was swiftly and violently struck down with one blow. The boy quickly went in to finish off his opponent but his next strike was parried away by the recruiter.
“What’s your name lad?”
The boy didn’t know how to respond to this but he felt his mouth move anyways “We are Kuth” the voice spoke in a strange guttural language the others didn’t seem to understand. The boy quickly cleared his throat and spoke again “I am Kuth”
“Welcome to the Brotherhood of Blood Kuth.
