Why "Redflag Sub-Layers" should be implemented in steemit as soon as possible! [Proposal]

in #steemit8 years ago

The Reputation System was recently implemented at steemit and everyone now more than ever is avoiding those little redflags on their posts. The Reputation is deeply linked with the upvotes and redflags and in this post, I'll try to explain why do I think steemit needs some information layers regarding flagging.

The Problem..

User's reputation can be affected when someone flags their post, currently, when clicking the icon it only shows this:

Once the users clicks OK, the post or comment will be flagged and it's not clear why did someone downvote a post, why did he/she redflag it? Was it abusive content? was some revenge that has nothing to do with the post? at this point, anyone can redflag without any justification. This lack of clarity leads to uncertainty and an author never really knows the reasons behind the redflags.

At the moment, it only shows the number of redflags a post has but it does not show who gave the redflag. If the upvote is public and it's easy to see who has upvoted, the same criteria should be applied to the redflags. So on the rollover of it should show the list of the users who downvoted:

Countermeasures..

First Layer: Who

The first layer would be really easy to implement and it has been explained above. Start by adding the list of users who downvoted.

Second Layer: Why

Users should add a reason why they flagged a content. They could should from a list of options or he could write his own reason. Adding this second layer of information will benefit everyone because it will be clearer to everyone and the authors would know who and why did they downvote. Knowing the reason for the downvote can prevent more downvotes in the future.

For example, a user has the perfect post but he notices 6 downvotes. He rollovers the and he now know that 5 of the downvotes were due to "Abusive spamming" and now he understands that he was spamming the steemit.chat and he can correct that to avoid further redflags. Below it's a very basic mockup on how the submission modal could be and how it could be seen in the frontend:

Their Layer: RedFlagging Curation

The last thing that I have in mind is the ability to upvote or downvote a redflag. This can be useful in many ways, for example, User XPT posts some pornographic material and it starts to get downvoted, in this case, theres no need to control the redflags because it was content that is not allowed on the platform. But this layer can be useful when someone starts getting flagged and the reason of the redflag is not justifiable, other users may notice that some redflags are also abusive and are meant to do harm to the author without justification.

So, mainly the users could go a little deeper and have a little more control over the redflags, who's giving them and why. By curating the redflags users could also gain or lose reputation and possible this could incentive users to use redflags in a more conscious way.

I got to this post late, but you've articulated my concerns and recommended solutions perfectly. Big upvote! Thank you.

Wow what great reasoning! It's upbuilding to see posts like this from people who are sharing great ideas and knowledge in order to benefit this platform and we the users/members. One thing is clear the administrators here at Steemit have done a great job at implemented ideas like this into a steadily improving product! BRAVO!

Great ideas. Requiring a reason for the downvote would be helpful, and totally out the vindictive downvoters. That has been suggested multiple times though, and ignored. Having others vote to agree\disagree with the curation flag would also solve a lot of the problems downvote brigades can cause. It would add a big layer of complexity to their new reputation algorithm though, so it probably won't be added.

We just need simple edit\delete commands back.. The ability to edit in ownership\author links and delete flagged items would solve about half the problem posts that are permanently stuck here now.

I'm really enjoying the dialogue here. I'm an old guy and am lacking a lot on the tech side so I really rely on members like you to fast track this part of my education. If you check my blog, where you'll see the stories that I write you'll notice that I'm a big advocate of posting and up voting quality. I believe that by adding value, as little as it may be we add great value collectively. Thanks for your input @tinfoilfedora!

I upvoted You

That's a pretty neat idea @brunopro , it would make it easier to spot "undeserved flags" too (quite a bit of those sadly) .

Have a good one !

I usually just reply to the post stating my reasons for flagging. Some good ideas up there though. I like the idea of judging the flags themselves.

These would be really helpful!

Made a similar post weeks ago got no attention at all so don't hold your breath.

maybe if we keep posting ideas maybe someday they can pick them up and implement it, let's stay positive ;)

I gave up being positive about this whole thing it's so rigged in favor a few I don't think it will be fixed not because it can't be but because they want to keep the power for themselves.

A great idea and a cool illustrative example. But will your opinion be noticed - that's a question...
