Jasper the Wonder Poodle

Jasper in the snow.jpg

Meet my precious standard poodle. His name is Jasper and he really needs to visit the groomer. We are calling his shaggy fur the Covid-19 cut because the global pandemic has made it difficult for poor Jasper to enjoy a spa day. In the meantime, Jasper is relaxing in a puddle of melting snow while shaded by the lid of my cold frame.

Jasper is a cancer survivor. When he was 5 years old, the groomer found a malignant melanoma on his lip. We were devastated because Jasper is a much loved member of our family. Our local veterinarian referred us to an animal hospital so we could get treatment.

The first thing they did at the animal hospital was test the tumour to make sure it was truly a malignant melanoma. Sadly, it was.

The tumour had already been removed, but it turned out that some cancerous cells had reached the lymph nodes in Jasper's throat. To stop the cancer from spreading further, the doctor decided to remove these lymph nodes. Then, Jasper was given a melanoma vaccine.

The melanoma vaccine is only available for use in dogs (so far), but it has worked. Jasper is now 9 years old and he continues to be cancer free. That is a big deal because malignant melanoma is very deadly. Only 20% of dogs survive 1 year after diagnosis.

The melanoma vaccine has worked very well in dogs like Jasper. Hopefully it will not be long before a melanoma vaccine is available for humans. Jasper is very happy to have helped out.

Nice story. I can understand your feelings when someone in your family is ill. We have a cat, he is favorit of all family members. Last year we got a lot of trouble with him. Now all is going better

I dare to give you an advise. Do your post in diary game stile. In such way you will have more upvotes

Thank you! I am new here and still learning how things work. Any advice is appreciated. By the way, you cat is lovely.

I have heard good things about full sized poodles! I'm so glad he's better, our hearts become so attached!

We rescue dachshunds, and had to keep one that was badly beaten and un-adoptable. We have had him several years, and he's beginning to act like a dog some now. They do steal your heart....

Staywarm, and be blessed!

Aw he looks precious.

Rotten to the core, but he is beginning to learn to be just a dog!
