Today not a typical birds photo feed for the challange but a new piece off Feathered Art for

#featheredfriday. A challange by @keithboone and a weekly for me, gotta spread your wings sometimes!

In Rotterdam a young owl is flying around again thanks to "donor feathers" from a deceased owl held in captivity called Jimmy.

It took a transplant of half a day, but with a great result: after an accident, a (still) nameless Rotterdam long-eared owl has been given a new life by the feathers of a newly deceased owl from The Hague. "Somewhere now an owl with donor feathers is flying around." The beast probably flew against something, fell to the ground and then was attacked by a couple of crows. Seriously wounded the owl arrived at Vogelklas Karel Schot. Its a bird sanctuary in my hometown. The feathers were damaged and he had a deep wound on his back.

After the treatment and the recovery period it appeared that the owl could no longer fly well due to the damage to its wing pines. At that moment they called Karel Schot to the colleagues of Vogelopvang de Wulp in The Hague to see if they could do anything for the Rotterdam owl without name.

The request from Rotterdam came just at the right time. Due to a death of owl Jimmy - a female - her feathers could immediately be used for a transplant in the Rotterdam animal. The bird's feather package is always saved for such situations after a death. The animals also only get a name after death.

"There was not a day between the death of Jimmy and the nameless owl from Rotterdam. We were able to use Jimmy's feathers immediately ”, says Sharon from Bird shelter De Wulp. "Sometimes the wings can still be damaged, no matter how careful we are during treatment. Without this transplant, this owl would never have been able to fly silently again. That is very important when catching prey. ”As if it were an Italian tailor-made suit, Jimmy's feathers turned out to fit seamlessly to her Rotterdam counterpart. The dimensions of the feather suit corresponded exactly. "These dimensions are major important, when the springs are too large or too small we cannot use them. It works the same as a clothing size for people, "says Lexmond. "The" transplant "lasted half a day, because we had to work with more precision than ever with multiple feathers. With expoxy resin we were able to stick Jimmy’s wings on the unnamed owl. ”

After a successful tes flight the nameless Rotterdam long-eared owl has been released again. "Somewhere between Rotterdam and The Hague an owl with donor feathers is now flying around. We were able to give him a second life. "

WOw that was an amazing read, its so cool to read such feel good stories like these

And apperently the always save the wings and feathers after a bird dies to do these transplants especially with special species like owls. Also the zoo works with them I thought was super cool

This is so cool for sure and something I never knew so thanks so much for sharing

Such beautifull creatures!

Wow that is unbelievable. I didn't know they transplanted feathers with bird injuries. Amazing, it would be such a shame to lose such a beautiful bird :)

What a great entry for feathered Friday! Owls are such noble creatures and I love seeing them perched and studying the surroundings in the country here.

I should post some of my little one’s feathered art as she has been obsessed with cockatiels lately.
