From surf to turf...a mulch/compost alternative!

in #gardening8 years ago

This year we will be gardening with seaweed! Across the street from our house is the ocean with its abundant supply of eelgrass that washes up onto the shore with each high tide. The winter storms have pushed the eelgrass far up on the beach where normal tides won't be able to pull it back, so we decided to collect our very first batch today.

Armed with a garbage can and a few pails, we made our way out to a spot where the eelgrass was piled high. We didn't expect it to be frozen and the top layer was hard to collect, but once we got to the thawed bottom layers we were able to collect quite a bit.

Collecting it in the fall would be optimal as it would have time to break down over the winter, in order to be tilled into the soil in the spring. Seaweed is one of the most ideal materials for fertilizing and composting.

We plan to use the seaweed for mulch around our tomato and pepper plants once the soil has warmed up. We will also use it to cover some hilly areas where mowing is a problem, to kill the grass and prepare the soil for a flowering ground cover.

Sort:

We don't have a lot of seaweed in this part of the country, but we do have a lot of cows. We used cow manure for our garden when I was young, until my Mom put her foot down and said no more. You probably don't have much of a smell problem with the seaweed, but we did with the cow manure.

When we purchased this property, we discovered the previous owners kept horses. As you know very well, they produce a lot of waste. As a result, @anise spent a few days of hard work shoveling it out of the barn and moving it to the garden....I was napping of course. This really helped to get our gardens here started as the ground is clay and doesn't have a lot of organic material which helps provide nutrients and essential minerals to the plants we grow.
Did you guy's have and keep your own cows, or was all the cow manure just a benefit of being in that part of the country?

....I was napping of course.

That almost resulted in a coffee covered laptop.

We did have some cattle. The first few weeks of springtime was always "fragrant". But the vegetables that came out of the garden were well worth it.

I am sure glad someone picked up on that!

hello greetings friend @brimax I hope you are good, I find the ideas you always give us in your publications incredible, this one in particular surprises me since I did not have any knowledge about, that seaweeds could be used as fertilizer for plants, this is perfect for people who have many plants because buying the fertilizer in some establishment is expensive, at least here in Venezuela the fertilizer for the plants is expensive, and this is something that will not cost us any money and that our mother does not give them nature through the sea. Thank you brother for sharing this wonderful idea with us, we always learn new things with your post and teach us to use things that many of us did not know could be used, to do other things, this is perfect since the silvers and trees are important for our planet and you always have to have at least one silver, and we already know that we can use marine algae as fertilizer. Thanks again for the post and I will certainly comment to my family, neighbors and acquaintances about this wonderful idea. regards

Always happy to hear you have learned something from our videos. We'll do updates throughout this growing season so you can see the progress and benefits of using seaweed as a fertilizer and mulch.
Thank you Brother!

Wow! you live by the sea. It's only good to watch but I am sure immense hard work put in to lead a life like this.

It's not nearly as hard as sitting down and practicing the modes for 2 hours! Really enjoying your videos Brother, keep up the great work you're doing here!!!

Hello friend, I hope you are well, in truth your dog caused me a lot of laughter runs for there and here hahahahaha you see that you enjoy it, you really work a lot as you love your animals and your farm, all that work gives them good fruits that we have seen in your publications, I find out things I did not know, never imagine that from seaweed you could take organic fertilizer, your crops make the most of it I have seen the recipes they prepare with them, I really like it what they do, venezuela goes through a difficult time but I know that this helped us learn things, to plant our own food, to take care of what we have, as for the subject of your previous publication very interesting friend, we must take care of our children are the future of the world, I send you a greeting from venezuela I am very grateful for the support I have had on your part, ah I forgot I am your fan so I hope to hear soon another of your songs, greetings!

Hopefully things will turn around soon for your country. Now with a new cryptocurrency and another one coming things will get better.
Our dog loves to go to the beach with us, and playing ball is her favorite pastime!
As for music, I just finished another collaboration with @soundlegion and will post later today or tomorrow!

That should work great for you. There are many organic fertilizers that use seaweed in them. If you collect more than you need just find a place to pile it up and make a compost pile with it. Keep adding and turning I bet your garden will love it.

We are certainly looking forward to sharing our results here. Thanks!

looking forward to hearing the results as you use seaweed this year - I've heard lots of good things about it!

You can count on an update!

can't wait ! very intrigued by the prospect!

You always give us good ideas it's good to take advantage of everything nature offers us

Your right as abundance surrounds us.

Where they live has many things close by, I like that about living near the beach is one of my dreams @brimax

Don't dream it...do it!

I will try that great idea in my home. regards

Let us know how it works for you...

I love your publications, my friend. I am new follower of yours

Many thanks.
