Chickens? Are you Crazy?

in #animals9 years ago

When we decided we were going to begin raising chickens, we really had no idea how much work was going to be involved.
We started out with a run down structure that was here on the property when we bought it. Rather than buy/build a new one, we repurposed what we could and began making it 'chicken' habitable. This is how it looked when we moved here:

One of the first things we needed to do was to make the barn predator proof so we could all sleep at night!
We dug a trench around the barn and attached 1/4 inch wire fabric to the sides and buried it to prevent predators from digging underneath. This is how the process looked:

Next we framed some inner walls to create the coop/nesting box area and installed some perching. As can be seen in the picture, we also added wire fabric on the inside as an additional safety measure to protect the birds from predation.

This is how it looked once we completed it. Hope this helps if you are thinking about raising your own birds.
We currently have 30 hens and average about 2 dozen eggs per day! Our friends and neighbors love us.

Nice post and such an attractive "chicken house". This post brings back memories of my childhood when my dad, who was not a farmer, had a few chickens he raised as my mom liked to have fresh eggs for her cooking. One of my chores as a little girl was to feed the chickens and I hated the job and the chickens because as I threw the chicken feed out to them they would hover too close to me. Had I been a bit wiser I would have thrown the grain much further out away from my feet and they would have stayed further away from me. Oh, shucks, how we live and learn.

Thanks for looking, we really appreciate it. We sure know what you mean, we use scratch as a way to lure the chickens away from us anytime we have to do some work in the coop. It keeps them busy and out of the way.

That is a nice looking chicken house. Nice work in repurposing that shed. You sure made it look nice! You have some lucky chickens! : )

Thanks so much for your kind words. We really appreciate you taking time to view our post, and we agree, our chickens are lucky!
