D.R. Davis, the modern-day English writer, observed in his book, "Down Peacock Feathers," of a number of years back: "The supreme irony of the human situation in every age is that the one thing, and the only thing, in which all mankind is concretely at one is sin. And the irrational paradox of it is that it makes any other sort of unity impossible." In other words, our universal tendency to egoistic self-interest, both as individuals and groups, tends to make our differences of background and function occasions for destructive conflict, self-destructive bitterness or both.

Some people are egoist and when they make decisions they will ask: "What is in it for me?" Some others are altruist who never cares about self-interest and want to maximize the welfare of others. Both egoism and altruism are basic traits - individual characteristics revealed through recurring behaviors at different times of individual personality. In our daily lives, we encounter different types of people. These people are, in some way, unique individuals.

The way to satisfy people's egoistic needs is by rewarding their activities on social networks. We can just as well acknowledge that we are all egoists, even if we do things for others, we, in fact, do it for ourselves, in the first place. We need people to recognize our importance in the world and to appreciate and respect our unique personality and to acknowledge what we do so that we can feel loved and important. Social-networking apps are excellent in the cultivation of our self-esteem and prestige.

Dilemma of divided man in a divided world

The tragedy of human divisions is not in the fact that we differ from each other in so many respects, but rather that our differences become the occasion for destructive feelings, thoughts, and actions - and the result is the dilemma of divided man in a divided world. Even when people do get together along lines of common interest, although not always, their real purpose is to form an offensive and defensive alliance against those who do not share the same common interest.

Different kind of divisions

The different kind of divisions into which mankind separates itself become the occasion for egocentric self-interest, turning both individual life and society at large into an arena rather than a commonwealth. But it is quite another thing to say that that the answer to the problem is simply to wipe out the divisions - this is plainly untrue. Divisions of some sort are going to continue to be the experience of mankind, and human sin will not be brought under control simply by depressing the distinctions between people.

A different kind of hope

The New Testament, however, sees a different kind of hope for the world. While there will always be divisions between people along all kinds of lines, not only culture, economics, and sex, but also special skills, special talents, and special interests, these need not result in destructive conflict When they are related together to a higher loyalty, these very differences can make possible a richer, more fruitful, more interesting life.

Unity proclaimed by The New Testament

The unity which the New Testament proclaims is this higher loyalty, brought about by the direct influence of Christ in human affairs, in our hearts and in our social life. To the extent that this becomes a reality in the way we look at things, our differences can be seen as complementary rather than primarily as a rivalry. And this is precisely what the world needs, a way of meeting the problems and challenges of daily experience on every level, from the family to the nations, not on the basis of egoistic self-interest but in the spirit of a cooperating family.
