Before the earth,there was the great world in the sky. In the sky was strong and beautiful tree whose roots spread in all direction north,south,east and west. All the food needed came from the great tree.

One day the young wife of the old chief of the sky world became ill. Nothing seemed to cure her. An old and wise man said that her cure would come from the root of the great tree. The sick woman sat by the side of the tree and waited as the people began to dig a hole to get to the tips of the root . they dug deeper and deeper and the hole got bigger and bigger. Suddenly the tree fell through the hole and with it fell the sick woman.

As she fell, two swam got caught her on their backs,but there was no place to put her down. Turtle swam to the surface of the water. There was a room on my back,said turtle, but there must be earth for her to stand upon. Turtle dove under the water,but returned without earth.

The other animals took turns diving deeper and staying under water for long and longer periods of time. Loon, Beaver, and Muskrat all returned with out soil. Frog tried last. frog was under water for so long that the other animals believed he had died. As they were about to give up hope,frog rose to the surface gasping,with a tiny speck of mud.

Put it on my back, command Turtle. frog did. Again frog dove down, and again returned with a speck of mud the mud began to swell and grow until it formed the whole earth. the swams who had been holding the fallen sky woman placed her gently on the land that had formed on turtle's back. Seeds from the sky fell from the sky fell from the woman's robe onto the new soil and plant began to sprout. This is how the earth came to be.
