SteemCryptoAcademy Season 4 Week 1 - Homework Post for Professor @yohan2on | Blockchain Technology and the Internet of Things (IoT)

in SteemitCryptoAcademy3 years ago (edited)

Hello steemians, welcome once again to my post. In regards to the lecture of our dear professor - @yohan2on, where he lectured us on blockchain technology and the internet of things - IoT. As a student of this class, I will be falling in the duty of the task given

Internet Of Things (IOT)

First, let us walk around the meaning of IoT. It is an abbreviation for 'Internet of Things which was introduced in the year 1999 by Kevin Ashton to enhance daily life living through the use of devices that can communicate within networks.

These devices are embedded with software and technologies that could serve the purpose of linking and exchanging data without the use of human intelligence or computer to human intelligence. Let's take a look at some of the examples of Internet of things applications.

  • RFID Smart Guns that can only work within 10in of its accompanying RFID-enabled watch.

  • Flood Alert Sensors that detects changes of some water parameter, in some cases, it provides information concerning the health units.

  • Smart Door Locks that utilize keyless doors which allow you to open your door without a physical key.

  • Soil monitoring sensors that allow a farmer to know the data of a temperature, rainfall, and other quantitative assessment to enable track and predict irrigation needs.

  • Home Energy Monitoring and Control That enables the management of power supply and electrical energy in the Home.

Let's Talk About The Futures Of IoT

Like I have said earlier, IoT in its simplest terms is the ability for devices that are connected to the internet to communicate within themselves, and they are in the list of computers, smartphones, laptops, and objects that have been equipped with chips to enable the communication of data within the network. As the world grows in advancement, I see a time where the world would become smart, cities and companies will adopt the mechanism behind IoT to enable fast and reliable works.

In terms of transportation, I see a future where cars will become smarter with the implementation of the 5G network, it might be sounding funny, But is still see a future where new cars will adopt IoT devices. There are also factors that may hinder the future of the Internet of things, which I will be explaining a few of them below.

Factors That May Hinder The Growth Of IoT - Elaborated with Crello.com

  • Lack Of Awareness: Awareness is one of the factors that may hinder the growth of the Internet of things, although, it has created means of assistance, awareness remains a fact that can hind its growth because it is not getting full attention in our community. Today, in my country, there are fewer consumers of this technology. even in the industrial sector, there is also lesser awareness of this technology.

  • Security: Security is another issue in the development of IoT, how? Some researchers have it that the devices that are connected to this technology are highly vulnerable to hackers which means there is every possibility that information in these devices will be disclosed to third parties thereby leading to loss of valuables.

  • Connectivity: IoT is highly dependent on connectivity, and these communications include very well connected networks across each other, execution of some core protocols, and transition between these protocols. These connectivity challenges may occur in the sector of power consumption, let's bring a situation where a home has some IoT devices that are working, if there is less power supply it will be difficult for swift communication between the networks.

Other factors that will still stand to hinder the growth of the Internet of things are; scalability, Complexity In Integration, and Interoperability. Let's see why blockchain technology would be of great help to IoT.

Explain why the future IoT depends on Blockchain.

We are all familiar with blockchain technology, knowing full well that every data/transaction that is been carried out in the blockchain is encrypted in a decentralized distributed ledger that is connected to cryptography which means all data are secured. Understanding these facts can also put a stop to the factors that are opposing the growth of IoT. Let us now see how will affect these challenges.

  • Security

As we have seen above, security is one of the shortcomings of IoT. Integrating IoT with blockchain technology can erase this factor because blockchain transactions are encrypted & decrypted meaning data can only be seen by the intended receiver with the help of decrypting the data using cryptographic functions. Let's have a look at the infographics below.

Blockchain IoT Illustrating the Security of a Home with Smart Door Locks - Elaborated with Crello.com

From the above graphics, smart Door Locks that utilize keyless doors which allow you to open your door without a physical key is been integrated into a homeowner by @bright-obias, and authorization is given to @armstrongdiho via blockchain technology because of security purposes. With the effect of blockchain technology, the smart door locks would not recognize any other user apart from the authorized user.

This will highly secure the homeowner's data because it is only the authorized user that can decrypt the information in order to access the smart door locks. This is how blockchain depending on IoT will affect its security fluctuations.

  • Decentralized Nature

Decentralized nature is also another dependency of the IoT. Generally, blockchain technology is secured, scalable, and it allows the accessibility of information across the entire network which means IoT would be more effective as pieces of information are shared in a secured manner. This would result in a high frequency of transactions in IoT devices. Now let's talk about a blockchain company that is connected to IoT - Filament.

FILAMENT

Filament is a company that is situated in the city of Reno in the US state of Nevada. It is a company that concentrates on the field of technology, it has been around since 2012 and has been into IoT with its founder - Allison Clift-Jennings.

The company has expertise in the technological fields of IoT application with the collaboration of blockchain technology known as blocklet chips, these technologies include the production of sensors that makes human activities easier. Let us see some use cases of filament below.

  • Enhanced Security & Scalabilty

Since the inception of filament and IoT integration, the security that is been shared across the IoT devices has been highly enhanced. As I have explained earlier, IoT devices are now secured because the company makes use of blocklet chips that are incorporated with blockchain's decentralized nature. It also ensures scalability within its users through the blocklet chip to enable fast and speedy communication.

  • Automobile Vehicles

The company has also initiated a blockchain startup with the University of Nevada to integrate a standard data principle between an autonomous vehicle via blockchain IoT. This is effected using the blockclet chip which means the internet of things that are connected to these devices would effectively manage the transmission of data.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I want to thank the professor for bringing up such a wonderful lecture that has expanded my intellect on IoT. Indeed, IoT is a great initiative, I see a future where this technology would skyrocket the universe because of its ability to hasten works even in our various homes. It was a great study altogether. Thanks to the professor again, and thanks for reading through to the end.
