457 years ago today, on January 31, 1561, Menno Simons died. Simons was an early leader in the heavily persecuted Anabaptist movement. Simons gave up his standing as a priest to be an underground evangelist and life-long fugitive. Among his beliefs were pacifism, adult baptism, and church autonomy from the state. He believed that Christians were part of a new society separate from the world and the state. Today’s Mennonites trace their heritage to this bold Dutch reformer.
