Modifying A Custom Car (Should It Be Done Steemit?)
If you have been following my blog you might have seen the post I did about my grandpa and his one of a kind custom sports car he built from a 1950 four door sedan. If you haven't seen the post you can check it out right here.
As you may recall the car is unfortunately in storage at this point and hasn't been on the road for a couple of years. It really upsets me that this is the reality of the situation.
Why Don't You Just Drive It?
It is a good question. You have to realize that my parents have twenty rebuttals to any situation and most of those rebuttals tend to be negative. Some of the rebuttals have some basis in reality and logic. For one the car is back in Indiana. I live in Arizona so getting the car out here and driving it around isn't real easy. Also the car has custom designed parts that my grandpa developed. So if something goes wrong then fixing it isn't very turn key. It is the only car like this in the world.
(Note: All pictures of my grandpa's car are original.)
Why Don't My Parents Drive It
My mom has gone through some knee replacement surgeries that have been very challenging so that has caused a lot of issues. On top of that they say that a lot of times judges don't know what they are looking at when this car is at a car show. That may be true but to me taking it to a car show isn't about winning a trophy. It is more about letting other car enthusiast enjoy looking at it.
The Changes The Car Went Through
I don't have a lot of pictures here in Arizona of the different changes the car went through over the years but my grandpa changed the paint job several times and also changed the engine configuration countless times.
That was part of the spirit of the car. Always modifying it and having a custom ride that was old school yet up to date. The car has air conditioning and he also installed a CD player when those were pretty new.
Here is a picture of the car with a Latham Super Charger.
So the spirit of the car was to always modify, update, and continue to customize it!
This car was built to drive and was never trailered so the fact that it is in storage is depressing to say the least.
Potential Modifications
Changing things on the car is sort of a double edge sword at this point. The car is a piece of art that my grandpa spent years on so changing the paint job is honestly a tough thing to consider.
But what if the paint job could be preserved but also modify the car in a way that it could be switched back to the current configuration very easily?
1) Plasti dip the car to give it a new look.
2) Change the tires and rims to a low profile setup.
3) Take out the CD player and install a tablet / phablet for navigation and music.
About Plasti Dip
This is a way that you can paint your car and give it a custom look without changing the under lying paint job. You can then just rip the plastic back off if you want to change the color or go back to the original. Here is a video showing the plasti dip being ripped off.
There are so many awesome colors you can dip a car with. The color I was thinking about going with would be this bright blue color.
Basically there would be a white layer put down first and then the blue would go on top of that. Here is a video showing the process and more views of that car after it has been dipped.
Another possible color that I like would be the "Reptile" look. Here is a picture of that.
Wheels
I would do a low profile look like these Amani Forged wheels.
Summary
All these modifications are speculative because there are things that would need to fall into place. My parents would have immediate concerns if anything was initially mentioned about modifying the car. The plasti dip protects the underlying paint and it can be ripped off. Also the wheels can be changed back pretty easily. These really aren't major modifications if you think about it.
So what do you think Steemit? If my grandpa's radical custom was plasti dipped in blue could it become The Ultimate Steem Machine? Should these changes even be considered? What do you guys thinks?
