A Friend Made, A Life Saved?

in #animals9 years ago (edited)

Yesterday, on a pit-stop from Zlatograd to Perperikon, I happened to notice an odd pattern on the ground. I reached down, turned it over, and to my surprise ...

At first, its eyes were closed, and it was almost motionless, but still alive. It was such a baby, that its plastron -- its belly, basically -- was soft to the touch. I kept caressing it, holding it warm in the palm of my hand, and breathing warm air onto it, until it finally opened its eyes.

I have to admit I was tempted to take it home with me and to nurse it back to health, but knowing the Bulgarian law protects it as a species, I decided instead to leave it in a sunny place (to keep it warm) where it had easy access to water and vegetation. Let's hope he stays healthy and happy in his original home:

We all have a share in taking care of the smaller, more modest denizens of our planet. Glad I could do my part, and I hope you are encouraged to do the same :) Ciao за now!

What a sweet face!

It is always an inspiration to watch you interact with animals, Brent.

Humans are the most interesting animals to work with.

Otototo! Soo cute <3 In the middle of the story I imagined that I will see it tomorrow when I come for a visit. Lets hope that the little guy is still alive and well :)

I don't know if you can actually tell how small it is, as the first photo above is using macro. It was about twice the size of a two-lev coin, in fact. I really, really hope it survives the winter!

Thank you for allowing him to continue to live wild rather than taking him home. You gave him the best possible chance :)

It's the least that I could do, really ...

Appreciate the effort @brentssanders !!
You just made the tortoise's day!!

May it live long and be strong!
