6 wins in a row
Yesterday we played Cardiff and we recorded our 6th win in a row with a 3-2 victory. The game was a very entertaining one from my point of view in the first half I was very dominant got myself 2 assist. In the second half we won a penalty and I stood up to take it but the captain of our team was trying to argue with me to take it, I said I was taking it but he was insisting on taking it, after what I said I was quiet and he was just making unnecessary sounds I’m my ear for about 5 minutes, whilst I was trying to focus on the taking the penalty, I ended up missing the penalty. We went down the other end and I made a tackle with gave Cardiff a penalty which they scored from. Honestly I wasn’t bothered too much because that happens in football but the arguing with me to take the penalty i thought was childish and there was no need.
It sounds like it was an exciting game and you performed well, but that argument with your captain could have lost you points! As @reservedsingle says, you should have pre-agreed set-piece takers before the game, then there is no room for argument.
What your captain did to put you off was very unprofessional, and this is a challenge you'll have to face at times. The best way to deal with these difficult situations is to ask yourself, "what would an elite player (insert rolemodel here) do in my position?"
The answer is almost always going to be that they have a pre-agreed penalty taker, but even if not, the best players have the self-confidence to pass on a penalty opportunity as they know they'll have the chance to score again. Also, you never know, your captain could miss and you might score the rebound :).
Hmmm... We've seen such scenarios of players arguing to take penalty kicks, even amongst World class stars. I believe it boils down to the whom the coach has appointed the penalty kick taker. It doesn't have to cause much brouhaha
