2 Minutes with the Farmer: Why We Graze Goats!!!
Today on 2 Minutes with the Farmer we are talking about why we graze goats. Goats are a huge part of our farm. They are the second largest money maker and we love our goats. They work in harmony with our cattle herd to utilize more of the forage we grow here on the farm. We use them as weed control and they are a lot of fun to watch.
Thank you for spending 2 minutes with me!

Very cool! We appreciate the same principles in farming. Have you considered mob grazing the cows, followed by goats and then finally chickens? The chickens will clean up behind, eating fly larvae and eliminating pests, but also spread the cow manure around so that you have a more even distribution of fertilizer. Just a thought.
We have our goats keep our areas clear and try to put them to work as much as possible. We don't have nearly the size herd as you though. Thanks for sharing. I love seeing how other folks do things.
That sounds like a similar principle to what John Seymor talks about in his book "Self Sufficiency". He talks about how the different types of animals benefit each other and the farmer over all. He also talks about readying the field for plowing after you've had cows, goats/sheep, and chickens by having pigs plow your field for you! I never heard of that concept before. He puts a lot of emphasis on creating your own farm ecosystem and sustaining it, with high value on the animal manure to dress the fields, crop rotation, growing your own animal feed, and avoiding monoculture.
That's our homesteading "Bible" LOL. We love that book. It is also a big teaching behind Joel Salatin as well. It's becoming a very popular concept, and for good reason....it works very well. We use our animals for as much work as we can. We haven't even mowed our yard this year because we have put animals to work on it and it has worked out well. Our pastures have our animals fall behind each other and always with chickens in the end, spreading the manure, eating the maggots to keep down flies, eating the seeds left over in the manure and of course spreading their own. It's a wonderful system.
We have tried mob grazing for 2 years. We were not happy with the results. The cattle just didn’t perform well for us. We now do a weekly rotation with the cattle and they have been performing much better. The goats generally follow the cattle after we move them. We only have 30 laying hens so they cannot keep up. Thanks for watching
Sounds like I might need to get some pet cows and pet goats.
Definitely;)
