3DPrinter Plastic Recycling

in #printing3d8 years ago

Hi ! Recycling is quiet difficult for plastic: the identification especially, you can have a PLA, PETG of the same brand and the same colour, after printing a few months ago you accumulate a lot of failed prints and what you can do with it ?
It is not yet a huge amount from a volume point of view, but recycling this is tedious. Building your own filament is not something I can think about at my small scale, it is not easy to produce a good quality filament.

I think I am a bit lucky because not far from my house there is a 3D Printer shop BulbZone (https://bulbzone.net/en/) that collects PLA that is sent to a French filament manufacturer called Ariane Plast that is creating PLA filament from this recycled PLA: https://www.arianeplast.com/58-3d-filament-recycl2-
This company has good reputation on their products that are mostly used by professionals, they sell also pellets. I will have to get some of their filaments to give it a try.

I wonder also how they can produce a good quality filament from recycled ones, because filaments are quiet different stuff even if it is a "PLA" due to the pellets used, additives, pigments and other stuff that I do not know. I really want to ask how they handle it.

What are you doing with your failed prints ? Do you have any local way to recycle them ?

I have not really started recycling my 3dprinter plastic yet. I just collect it in separate piles for if and when. I have however a long and glorious history of recyckling the sprues from warhammer figures. i would cut it into small flakes, put them in the oven at app 180 degrees and press them into flat plates between to pieces of aluminium. I then used them in my scratchbuilding projects. There is a guy on youtube (precious plastic I think his channel is called) he is all into recycling plastic and there are tons of interesting information on his channel (how to recognize different types of plastic for instance)

Thanks ! Cool info, I will have a look on this youtube channel.

Pretty interesting

I don't think we have such a place like that here in Holland, but it would be nice to be able to recycle ourselves from home and reuse it again, so it is never wasted :-).

On https://map.preciousplastic.com/ there is nothing in Almere, the shortest distance workspace is in Amsterdam https://vanplestik.nl/en/about-us-2/ but they do not say anything if you can bring your plastic.

I'm sitting on a big box of rejects. I'm waiting for the day something comes along to cost-effectivly convert it back into filament! :-D

There are interesting stuff on this website as @evilhippie said: https://preciousplastic.com/
I think it is a scale problem for the filament, you need enough supply/demand to cover the cost for at least the 2 machines involved in the process: https://preciousplastic.com/en/videos/build/shredder.html and https://preciousplastic.com/en/videos/build/extrusion.html
For the extrusion machine to produce a good filament, you need another class of machine than the diy one: roundness and diameter control.
I think it can be done. There are interesting challenges such as the consistency of the material produced by such recycled plastics.
It is also possible that we start to see desktop 3d printers working effectively with pellets, there are already a few medium/large industrial 3dprinters using this.

interesting.

When I get my hands on my own 3D printer, I'll definitely have to look into reducing waste as much as possible.

You already performed a choice on what you want to take as 3D Printer ?

I actually won a pre order for a makeX MIGO 3D printer back in December, in myminifactory and vectary's Christmas ornament design competition 😆

Nice, I hope you will receive it soon and start to play with it

thanks :)

The pre-order is for August on their official Indiegogo page, so I'm hoping the two of us who won it in the competition get it a bit earlier hehe
