The Diary Game || 28-05-24 || Appealing for a Better Form of Discipline in a Public School

Dear Diary
It was a other day in the public school I was to sent to with my colleagues to create an impact. I got to discover even more challenges that makes students withdrawn from having or developing interest towards their studies even as it's free. **I was tempted to believe that people don't value things that are free until they used their hard earn money to take up something .

Even those in private schools that pay for knowledge sometimes don't value their education. So some factors are put in place to this cause. It is said that the rod of discipline will take the foolishness out of a boy. I witnessed discipline or should I call it punishment today and I tried addressing this form amicably with the personnels involved. I was also disappointed by something important. The narrative is shown below.

Morning Activities

It was the dawn of morning and the weather was quite clement and sweet. It was a perfect day for meditation but that wasn't a workout day for me. I took to preparing for the projects I had at hand as early as possible before embarking on preparing to create an impact in this public school a second time. The cost of transportation keeps rising on a daily basis making it annoying for road users. It took me almost 10 minutes to see a vehicle that would take me to my destination at an affordable fare.

Finally I saw one and hopped in. The driver was kind of radical and encountered several reckless driving. I wanted alighting as my life was involved but he wasn't that reckless I thought to myself. On getting to the school, I took to meeting with my colleagues and then exchanged pleasantries with them.

Everyone were moody and not as bright as the first day. On my way to a class I was positioned, I witnessed a junior student cry deeply because he was being punished by laying down on the saturated ground. The prefects in the school did publish these students for coming late not minding their background.

This was one of my discoveries. In public schools, not everyone come from the same background. Most of them are living with non parents who treats them unfairly or are against their progress in school. These ones may always come late to school if such happens, not making him at fault. I didn't fancy the punishments given though I remembered this same punishment was given me in my high school days.

On getting to the class, it was rowdy with about 70 students in one class. I tried controlling the noise as it was just too much. I kept them busy with some motivational speeches. Most of them need seriously mental rehabilitation as it can be a life changing event for them. Majority don't know why they are in school. I tried creating a scene whereby I'll get to know the challenges they face in general.

I sat them down for an hour, telling them what they need to know about their future. One of them in class told me he has no future and that his future lies in the hands of his aunty. I tried changing that belief because that's what most of them think . It ends in high school then you learn a skill or you become a taut.

I was so emotional hearing a lot of things about these students. At least one thing they learnt from me is that they have a life to live and they need to study hard to get that life otherwise they'll live to grow other people's life. They asked about sponsorship and money. I told them, when there's a will, they'll always be a way. About 10 people were already in tears probably because I may have awakened a history of their very own life.

In no time, the chemistry teacher came forward and ordered the class to write a note. As she was about leaving to get the note, I heard people saying equilibrium. I didn't understand it at first not until the head boy reported to the vice principal just passing and also told me what it meant. He said;

This chemistry teacher has refused to teach them equilibrium to their understanding that's why they call her by that word. I was pissed off as that was an insult no matter what.

The students were ordered to lay on the floor of which they'll be flogged later. I didn't like this form of punishment as it was going to be double. It's better they get flogged that to lay on the ground. They laid there for 30 minutes before getting flogged. It was actually the right thing as most students need to face serious punishments before they learn.

But sometimes, these punishment leads a student to revolt. If they aren't punished, they won't learn. It reminded me of my secondary school days **where I was punished at the expense of not doing anything wrong. After the punishment, these students were angry because they were punished for what they didn't do. This was the worst form of punishment back then for me.

In no time, a girl who is asthmatic threw up and started breathing heavily, holding her chest high. Sitting close to me, I held her to an open space for fresh air while other teachers and students came in to see what was going on. Luckily for the student, her mother working as a librarian came to her rescue.

I then tried appealing with some of those teachers that at some point, they need to reconsider their form of punishment. Who knows if it's the wet floor the girl laid on or the pressure from the beatings. I still continued not until I left for another class to crest this same impact and also watch my colleagues do same. We left the school compound in no distant time to attend a lecture that didn't hold. It was painful though I whirled away my time some steemians who made my day before returning home.

That's how far my day could carry me. I learnt a lot though.
