Fungi Friday - A LOVELY RED MEAL
This very good looking ... and very edible mushroom ... is Lactarius sanguifluus ... in Croatia is called krvava mlijecnica, a name that has to do with blood and milk, it means approximately a Bloody Milk Mushroom, which makes sense because of the very peculiar characteristic of this fungi to pour dense red milk - like thing when is cut or broken. That makes it easier to determine and safer to eat. When it comes to eating, this mushroom is excellent in my opinion. Not only has nice fungi taste but is a bit like pepper, especially when is raw or just slightly cooked.
The red milk is the most important characteristics for determination because the shape, color, and size can vary considerably. I photographed this beautiful red one in the region called Gorski Kotar, about 150 km from where I live, a mountainous region with great continental woods and snowy winters. Here, on the Adriatic coast, they come in hard to define pale colors, a mix of pale red and green and are much smaller. But the red bloody milk and the taste are the same.
And that's it :D Bon Appetit, have great fungi Friday.
( As always in this posts on Steemit, I did the photography part too )
I love your picture, but somehow I'm resistant to the beauty of fungi. I know they are essential and omnipresent. Just looked up an article as I was writing this comment (https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2018/08/10-surprising-facts-about-fungi/) which explains the wonders of fungi. And yet--not my favorite natural life form. Bit of irrationality, I guess.
Still, I will continue to read and educate myself...keep posting these fantastic pictures. Maybe that will help :)
I can always understand a bit of irrational dislike for some things, maybe can have something to do with them almost always be present in some sort of decay, from the various molds on walls and rotten food to the mushrooms and other forms on decaying wood or among the fallen leaves :) They are neither my favorite form of life ... but I like them ... on many levels ... Above all, I like visually the variety of shapes and colors and all those strange shapes and textures that are often so different from plant and animals ... they make me feel like I just arrived with the spaceship Enterprise on some strange planet where no man has gone before, the fungi look great for a SyFy fan - ''very alien, they look'' ( As master Yoda once said) :D Then... I love the taste ... I like to eat mushrooms and even more search for them, and that concentration, excitement and a bit of risk involved in determining the edibility status :) I like flowers in spring a bit more .... but fungi in autumn also make me pretty happy.
Thanks for lending me your lens. Seeing beauty. It is a gift :)

Thank you!
Wow i wish they grew around here. Looks amazing. The milk caps that grow here have some poisonous lookalikes and bitter ones too so i avoid them alltogether.

Thanks :) It's a cool and photogenic mushroom.
That's a beautiful mushroom, but all the talk about bloody milk does not make me want to eat it! Quite the contrary!
:D I understand you ... many people I know here have the same reactions to this subject.
Wow it is gorgeous! I would never have guessed it is edible.
Happy Fungi Friday :)
True :) that intensive red color looks alarming and then when some strange red liquid comes out ... even more so. Happy Fungifriday :)
