Gone rabbit huntingsteemCreated with Sketch.

My father told me a story recently. It was about how my Dad, Joe,(who was about 15) and my Uncle Henry his older brother 23 and my Uncle Carl(my mother's brother also 23, used to go rabbit hunting at night in Metter GA. Hunting Rabbit at night was illegal but poor people cared about eating, not laws made by people who cared more about rabbits than hungry people. It wasn't about sport. You shined a light on the rabbits, they froze and you shot them. Took them home and cleaned them and had a big pot of meat for the family of ten brothers and sisters and two parents. Anyway, this particular night, the two older men allowed my father to go along, to have someone to do the dirty work and play practical jokes on. Towards the end of this rabbit hunt, they happened to kill a couple of rabbits inside the cemetery which was gated in cast iron and locked at night. Someone would have to climb the fence. Joe, my father, was elected. When he got over the fence and got to the first rabbit, his brother and future brother in law peeled off in the truck leaving him in the graveyard, at night. After he walked the many miles home they were sitting on the porch and started joking that the ghosts hadn't got him nor the police....Daddy said it's funny now but he wasn't amused at the time. My father is 72 now and Henry and Carl are both 80. Carl has a bad heart and Henry just survived throat cancer. I am trying to save their stories before they themselves are gone. Being 53 myself I am starting to understand how little is left of us when we go. Hope you enjoyed the story. More to come...
