Viewly: understanding the Steem/IPFS/Ethereum powered Youtube competitor
Viewly is here and it is the new Blockchain powered Youtube competitor and sister to DTube. In this report we will explore the basics of DTube.
What is Viewly?
Viewly is the new Blockchain powered video hosting and monetization platform.
Content upload
Viewly supports two means of video upload:
- direct upload
- youtube sync
Piracy and censorship
Veiwly will not involve itself in copyright dispute but leave it to the video hosts. While video on the platform will not be censored, contents on Viewly's website will be moderated "hide infringing or inappropriate content".
Underlying technology
Viewly does not use its own Blockchain technology, instead it uses:
- Steem to store its video meta data and roothashes,
- IPFS to store and host videos,
- while its tokens system is based on Ethereum.
Viewly will not support third-party advertisement seen they are seen as a tool for spying on viewers.
Content modetization modules
Upvoting module
Unlike Steem where there is a central reward pool to be distributed to users through upvotes, Viewly uses a distributed reward pool system where each user periodically relieves tokens based on their activity.
When users upvote the videos of others on the site, they directly send the author rewards from their own rewards pools.
Pay per view module
Viewly also allows creators to charge for content based on pay-per-view bases.
Subscriptions module
Instead of charging for each content, creators can simply use the subscription model to build a paywall.
Other extras
Other monetization avenues include direct user tipping and possible contracts.
Tokens and ICO
Token system
Tokens will be used to pay for hosting on the platform, and serve as the default internal currency on the platform. There will be only 100 million token cap and they are all mined at launch.
Token distribution
- 10% of all tokens will be sold during the pre-ICO which is currently live.
- 40% will be sold during the main ICO which will happen in November
- 20% will go to content creators and influences
- 18% goes to the founders and team
- 9% goes to supporters
- 3% goes to a bounty program
Token crowdsale
The pre-ICO is already live and ends in 4 days while the main the main token crowdsale will happen in November.

Comparison with DTube
DTube is built on Steem tokens and uses Steem as its internal tokens, however when it comes to Viewly it uses its own Ethereum based tokens as its internal currency.
Aside the difference in internal currency, both DTube and Viewly use Steem to store their video matadata and root hashes while storing the video files on IPFS.
Also, Viewly does seem to have a corporate development approach, as opposed to Dtube which is solely an individual initiative.
