The name Tristan da cunha originated from tristao da cunha who happened to be the name of the person who first spotted the island and it was said that the island was formed by volcanic rising. The first ever permanent settler in Tristan da cunha who happened to be an American by name Jonathan Lambert arrived and settled there years later after it was spotted by tristao da cunha.

Tristan da cunha island's population is very small with just about 290 people and this population is made up of just 80 families with just seven surnames. In this island, new residents are not allowed to come settle there but if it must happen then it will be with the approval of all the families, hence their population does not increase or decrease much, only residents are allowed to own or purchase lands. Due to the population issue, marriages between relatives do frequently occur.

In Tristan da Cunha everything about health care is free with just one resident doctor and five nurses but in the case of serious health issues the patient is transferred and treated in Cape Town and travelling to Tristan da Cunha or out of Tristan da Cunda is only done by boat.

All families in this island are farmers, they own livestocks like cows, sheeps, chickens, ducks and geese. They also own gardens and their best exporting crop is potato, There potatoes are said to be the best in the world. The potatoes are planted in special farms called patches. Also they are into fishing since it is an island.
