How Do YOU Decide WHO To Support Here?!?

in #steemit6 years ago

I have been on here for about 10 months now although sometimes it feels longer. In that time I have learned a ton and grown here more than I initially thought I would. While there are rougher weeks or chunks of time, I spend a great deal of time here trying to not only build up myself by putting out what I feel are quality posts...but to also engage with others here be it as responses to the lovely comments I am fortunate to receive or through me opening a dialogue with others. Being active through Discord has helped me as well as I joined awesome initiatives such as @helpie (gotta give a shoutout to my peeps there). Attending Steemfest in Krakow was not only a memorable experience that I will cherish forever, but it helped me to connect and build relationships that are near and dear to my heart.

This might jump around without much structure as I am just winging it a bit so I apologize in advance if I seem like I have trouble focusing on one thing.

IcyWebbedAmericanlobster-size_restricted.gif

I am a big cheerleader for Steem as a whole. I am not a tech guy so there is still plenty that confuses me and things that I still need to learn, but I love the opportunity that this place provides. I am trying each and every week to soak in a bit more about just what makes this place tick. How witnesses work and what it takes to become one. I want to be more involved here as the days go on and I am really excited about an initiative that I am starting to work on. I do believe that there are extremely bright days ahead, and that those of us here that are taking advantage as early adopters will reap some tasty rewards down the line.

But this got me to thinking, who do you support here? I don't think there are any wrong answers here but I am curious as to how you determine that you are going to throw support behind a specific Steemian. For me it's a mixture I think. I try to throw support behind those early folks that helped me stick around here. No doubt, starting off here can be tough and full of lots of alone time. Luckily the worlds that I am immersed in most of the time which is comics, toys, art, movies, and basically anything involving the nerd world...is pretty strong here as far as support goes. Don't mistake that for a large community or a powerful one. We are small and fairly insignificant in the grand scheme of Steemit accounts, but very supportive towards each other. Kind of like how I see the Silver & Gold community being. As I'm sure it is with tons of other communities that I am not even aware of. Support from within which is great. We all want the communities that we are involved in to grow and prosper here.

lets-grow-together.jpg

What I am more curious with is outside of that element, how do you determine who you put your support behind? For me it's basically friends or people I struck up good conversations with. I had a whole new world of friends that I wanted to support after attending Steemfest. Just through my own blogging or reaching out on others posts, I have become friendly with people so far outside the nerd world. These are passionate people that have the same outlook as myself regarding this place and want to not only grow here but to help the platform grow into a juggernaut! I throw my support behind lots of those people as well.

People that do tons for the community and are fighting the good fight. Those people earn my respect and support as well. Some of these people don't even know who I am but I show them the love from time to time as I know they are working towards making this a better place for all of us.

What about the whales? I don't mean to sound ungrateful so I hope this does not come across as such...but what do you all look for? I have gotten to this point of a Dolphin with literally no whale support. I have had a few larger accounts show me love a handful of times in the almost year since I have been here, but I don't have "whale support" as lots of my friends do. So I am curious as to what you guys look for when deciding to throw some love towards a Steemian? I have friends who have a whale supporting their account to some degree and lots of times it has come by them kinda….whale hunting. I just don't have that in me so I am wondering what it takes to get on your radar? I know I have personally struck up good conversations with several of you. I even had a really nice time and connected super well with one certain whale at Steemfest just to be blown off time and time again from this person with each and every attempt since. Kinda discouraging to be honest...

How about supporting from within? I mean in the form of self voting. Do you do that? I know it's a touchy issue that is not black and white and some feel very strongly one way or another regarding it. I self vote myself. I have invested lots of fiat into this and while this place is somewhere I have made tons of friends and I love reading, writing, and interacting here...it's also an investment towards my future. I take it very seriously and self vote my pieces as I am (usually) proud of the work I put into them. Not comments but just my pieces. I have 0 problem with anyone who self votes their work but I don't like those that only do that. For me personally, spread the love around. I know there are certain users here that pretty much only support their own work with very little support going to others. I will NOT throw my support behind those folks.

Overall quality pieces are things I also get behind. I find it super exciting to throw love to a new user or even an existing one when a piece or two by them catches my eye. I also try (although I can be better) to show love to lots of smaller accounts. Even if the subject matter at hand is not of interest to me, if I see the efforts being put forth by a user here on a consistent basis, I shine some love down on them.

So I want to know...how do you determine who you are supporting on the regular here? Lets strike up a nice dialogue in the comments below!!!

Thanks for reading my thoughts.

I support those who are in Steem for the long haul. Those who are not powering down and also those who support me.

In addition, they have to be interesting! :)

Bugger....aaaaaaaaaall of 'em? ?????

There are a few exceptions, but mostly ... Yes.

Converting steem to litecoin to convert back to steem, - for my 'poker trial, steem building experiment', doesn't count does it?

(I'll throw in a complimentary video when I find my sense of humor...it's around here somewhere, I just know it is...)

(Still haven't tried to sign up yet - so don't even know if I can, from where I am)

Solid answer!!!! I am pretty much in the same boat.

You bring value here and I read a few good posts from you. :)

I think anyone taking the time to respond to this question are people that should be supported. They are the true lifeblood of this community.

I support me... and a few others. :D

It depends on many things and I try to share some around. I generally spend a fair bit of my voting power on comments I get though as I think that is a good way to get people talking. Higher power goes to those who have track record regardless of their wallet and those who I think are actually trying to build something of a position for themselves on Steem. I have upped my voting percentages as prices have fallen which means I can't vote as far as earlier.

You should be using @ocdb to grow your account a bit too as you are already whitelisted.

@ocdb is really awesome. It's quite an honor. I haven't been deemed good enough for this honor yet. But I will not give up.

Yeah I gotta get cracking and give it a shot. Hope to see ya there soon! 😉

I think that soon there will be an application process for the whitelist.

Thank you for your response @tarazkp, very much appreciated. I'll be watching for updates. 😎

That true and you always upvoted my comments leaved in your blog. ;)

I try to answer them all too but I fall behind a lot at the moment.

It’s hard to stay current and answer everything but I do try. Once in a while I slip if it’s s nutty week but I try to get to each comment.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Yeah I used to vote tons of comments before SteemFest. It’s definitely harder for me to do as many nowadays though. I still try and do a few each time I respond to comments.

Yeah I know I’m whitelisted and I delegate a small amount to them. I’ve just never utilized it yet. I should make an effort this week.

Posted using Partiko iOS

I also tried to whitelist, but just got an error message. Is there any tutoeial or something I have to do? Thanks!!

you have to be put on the whitelist by @ocd.

I think @whatsup hit the nail on the head, support those her for the long haul. I support people, communities, apps, content. I support positivity and engagement.

" I am really excited about an initiative that I am starting to work on"
Im rather excited to hear what your working on ;-)

It has already begun!!!! Lol. It’s going to be slow moving but I hope it’ll pan out even half as good as I think it could be. Excited to talk about it once it’s ready!!!

ah man, im no good with not knowing. hit me up on discord and let me in on your secret

Nicely written buddy. I think it is great that you carry on and I usually look forward to your posts in my feed. The getting support thing can definitely be a great incentive. I support you as much as I can because what you choose to write about is normally interesting. This article is not an exception.. well done.

Why thank you friend! Very kind worlds that I truly appreciate. ❤️

Yeah it’s just something that I think deserves a bit of thought...especially for those that are committed. That’s a main selling point for me that I’ve seen a few others mention as well. If you are in it for the long haul....

It’s definitely hard though. I have certain folks on autovote and on a busy day my VP is beaten down. Even in these slower times, there are tons of good accounts and initiatives to support.

Appreciate the response as well.

Support of the #comics tag and love seeing use of any tags in that realm

#marvel #dc #comicbooks #batman #spiderman #superman #wonderwoman #xmen and so on

I love seeing Steemit users active outside of Steemit and those users who support multiple cryptocurrencies and other new techs. It's a big crypto world and it's hard to be decentralized on just one network, so love seeing users like @the-bitcoin-dood, @coingecko, and even @trevonjb being active here on Steemit, so upvote them and posts like theirs. Edit in some more: @joechiappetta @reseller @marketingmonk

I love the artists, enjoy supporting those sharing their arts of all "skill" levels and mediums going on here. Given time and more kinks worked out I see big things for something like @ntopaz / https://www.ntopaz.com/

There is so much genuine good and cool content on the site, I easily overvote. I am going to go back to my really overvoting way I think. Basically don't be a ignorant racist and a vote from Crypto Collectibles will be your reward.

Edit: Some shares of Steemit posts on reddit if anyone still has accounts there
@arseniclullaby in /r/SilverAgeComics, @readingdanvers in /r/Captain_Marvel/, @modernzorker in /r/CopperAgeComics/.

Thanks for the mention! Much appreciated :) Proud to be a member of the Steemit community and the cryptocurrency community in general! I agree, there's just too much out there to be stuck on one coin or one platform!

This comment was made from https://ulogs.org

Agreed. I have my stupid hands in many pots and while lots are worthless at the moment, there are tons of projects that have very intriguing upside. Still early I keep telling myself.

Posted using Partiko iOS

Yeah I scout out a lot of the same tags as well. Some days it’s a ghost town and sometimes I’m surprised at who else is talking about this stuff. Nice seeing new faces.

I’ll check out some of the other banes you dropped here as well.

I suggest starting with this Bane

Lol. Fuckers catch every mistake. Lololol

I support this dude called @thebetterblewitt.. he's cool. Unlike some people around here

I self vote myself

Monster. Have you no integrity?

Hahaha missed our banter :P
and yes Happy Birthday and what not

Like a dern fool I clicked that user name wondering how the hell blewitt had a hater and what an odd asshole username to pick lol.

A score for your comment

Lololololol

Well I did get flagged yesterday by some loser. Did nothing as they hold no weight but still pissed me off. Checked their account and they are just one of those shit accounts that flag a ton of folks for no reason. Fun!!!

Posted using Partiko iOS

Haha thanks... Truth is though, he has many haters, he just downvotes them well, so they're usually out of sight ;)

This is not a better one so that account will be flagged for being a damn fibber. 😜

Thanks for the b-day wishes my sweets. Hope you have diarrhea soon. ❤️

Posted using Partiko iOS

Awww you're so sweet, loathe you too <3

We have the loveliest relationship on the chain. Hands down.

My vote isn't really worth much, so I tend to be a bit tight with it and save it for either offerings where I might be able to get a tiny curation reward to help me grow, or for users of the #Lego tag. I tend to skip past posts that already have good support, not because I don't want to show appreciation, but because the insignificant value of my pissant upvote would have zero effect.

As self voting, I agree there are mixed opinions on it. Like Blewitt said, if you don't vote for anyone but yourself, you're a bit of a douche, but self voting in moderation doesn't seem unreasonable.

I gotta start using the LEGO tag then!!! 😜

I do have a cool LEGO piece I want to pop up soon though. It’s definitely tough and I can’t even imagine where the votes would go if and when this place starts boomin again. That’s a good problem to have though I guess.

I support some for love and some for money on my autovoter. I use @steemdunk for free and only get to vote for 20 blogs on it.

Love

  • My son @bxlphabet
  • Other steemers I have met or care about
  • Projects that mean a lot to me - all related to helping little guys

Money

  • Places I need to vote on so they vote for me
  • Places I need to vote on so they vote for me at higher value

I go in there weekly to check my votes and make sure everyone is still here and adjust as needed. I have a list of people and projects I will add when I can.

I do not vote for any whales or often see their posts at all. They are up there fighting among themselves about BIG topics and I just stay out of it.

Self-voting, yes, I do it and I am constantly amazed that it is a touchy subject.

My 100% vote at full power is 7 cents. Only little people will care if they get it.

I am much more focused on making comments. I comment 30-50 times a day and have done that for most of my days here for 1.5 years. I could never vote for all of those posts and maybe one of them will get my vote each day since my autovoting uses up my power anyway.

I do not vote below 90% and sometimes do not get there for days if my autovoting people are posting a lot. If it gets below 85% for any length of time, I go in and drop percentages. I never vote for less than 1 cent.

If I had a bigger vote, I would vote at a lower percentage and spread it to more people, but at this point, my voting is not really something I worry about too much since it is such a low amount.

If my vote value increases, I will add one of the other autovoters and do more. The first thing I would do is upvote comments on my posts. All of those comment votes would be for 3 cents or more due to the dust vote issue.

Wow! Fantastic response with tons of info. Love it!

I wish I could stay at 90%!!! I’m constantly around 65%-75%. Just the way it goes for me. Lol

I’m surprised the self voting this is as big a topic as it is as well. I don’t know many who abuse it. Most that I know that do it are trying to build themselves and also invested hard earned cash into it so it is an investment. Also the folks that I know that do it spread the love which is what’s important in my opinion.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. All great pointers. ❤️

Posted using Partiko iOS

You can get to 95% by not voting for however many days it takes to do that - not many. Then just stay there! You do not want to be shooting blanks.

No I know that. Problem is I vote for too many people daily that it would drop down immediately. I should take a few days hiatus and see where that leaves me though. If I could stay in 75%-85% I’d be much happier.

It would help your curation rewards and the people you vote for. That's the way I think of it.

I have a different approach to the question of "who to support" on this platform.

I don't support anybody. I support content.

I know, I know. This "content first" strategy is clearly madness. I should jump on board the personality cult train and ride along, tooting the horn whenever possible. I really need to decide that I will always vote for everything that an individual produces, no matter what it is, an auto vote that thing into oblivion, hoping to ride the hype train all the way into lambo station.

But the truth is – that's not what I do. It's not what I want. I reward things that I like. I do it without an eye to the inherent gambling idea that underlies the Steemit mechanics, that is if you can get a vote in early enough on something that you think is going to be popular, you will earn more than voting for just what is popular with you. It's a race and a bet if you want to maximize your returns.

(Truth be told, I think that the underlying mechanics are pretty toxic when it comes to encouraging good content. It encourages bandwagon jumping and bot wrangling, but not good content. When the mechanics don't encourage people to signal their own preferences but instead signal what they believe other people's preferences will be, you don't actually deliver value via that signal, you just encourage the entire population to converge on an arbitrary class or type of content that everyone will vote for, no matter what they like. Which is, pretty much, what we see.)

I don't really care if people self vote; what they do with their own SP is not my business. I don't care about the witnesses, really. They have nothing to do with the things that I like and I have nothing to do with anything that matters to them, except to the very tiny value of my vote. I don't care about the whales, because chasing them has the same effect on content that the underlying assumptions about the voting architecture do: homogenization and broad disinterest.

If you're interested in my vote, as small and useless as it is, make content I'm interested in. But more importantly, make content you're interested in. It may not be anything for me – and that's okay. It needs to be something for you and people that like the things that you do.

Otherwise, what's the real point? Really, what's the point?

The only point that matters is whether I like the content. The only way it matters is the tiny fraction of the relatively small reward pool my SP actually stands for, and that's pretty much nothing. The only valuable part of my vote is that it indicates that I was intrigued by, was interested in, or wanted to reward a piece of content – and that's all that it means.

In a real sense, that's what all of them mean.

Solid answer!

I support content as well but also specific individuals who are trying to make this place a more successful one. But I get what you are saying 100%. I pretty much agree with most of your mindset about this joint but I do throw support behind individuals that I like.

Appreciate the well thought out response brother.

I support users who I have developed relationships with, which usually are individuals I consider to have quality content, because we naturally align.

I support users of @esteemapp through my internship with the eSteem encouragement program.

I look for new users who have quality content, are trying their best, and seem genuine.

I support @helpie.

I support @dfacademy because I believe in them, work with them to help them achieve their goals and dreams, and feel charitable work is amazing, especially for the future (The children)

I support @spl, because their one of my families here too.

I've probably missed some here..

0% vote myself.

Why do I operate this way? Because I believe in Steem, and I believe in all the wonderful people here, so I try my best to vote according to a set of "guidelines" , while also remaining perceptive/objective with myself, while trying to "feel" the user, because it isn't always easy to determine quality based of personal preference. To be objective and fair, I try to look at as many variables as I can think of.

Much love bro!

True dat. Just developing a good relationship is enough to make me throw some love. Even if it’s small. It all adds up.

All good points and I’ll definitely check out some of the accounts your dropped here.

Appreciate the input as always my friend. Shooting the love right back at ya!
