Nothing better than sharing pizza with friends.

This is a flat color Toony style art commission for TigertheMeerkat on Twitter. For this posting, I figure I could start showing the steps that I take to achieve the final resulting pics you see me posting. I'll do this for now on starting with my newest pics so that means for my older pics if I post them him, you'll probably won't see the steps.

⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜ ⚜

Note: These are steps for digital artworks. At the time of this posting I am using Krita art program. I sometimes us PaintTool Sai like I used to use a lot.

  • Canvas Prep/Rough Sketch

I first start off by having my canvas with a neutral color like a grey background to be able to see the colors I will be using for sketching and linearting easier. I start off with 4 layers (background color layer, two sketch layers, and an extra layer in case need for extra sketching) I then start off with basic rough sketches of the shape of the characters, items, and sometimes the background if it is a detailed or complex background. I sketch in blue so it can be a lighter color when I draw over it, as least for me.

Step 1.png

  • Fine Sketch

Then I go over the rough sketches with a finer sketch. It may look like it is a lineart but it is not I assure you. lol This can be one of the toughest and biggest process for me because this is where putting the details of your or the client's idea comes to play more so than when you was just drawing the basic shapes in the rough sketch. So there would be lots of editing in this phase. For SKETCH or COLOR SKETCH drawings, this would be the final or second to final step (respectively) for the drawing with the color sketch only needing, well....coloring!

Step 2.png

  • Lineart

After I complete my fine sketch and it is to my satisfaction or if it is a commission, it is to the client's approval, then this is a where I begin my linearts which will of course be in another layer as will the be the same assumption for the rest of the steps. This is a process too as I want to get my lines looking good but if I did my fine sketches right, this process is almost like just tracing over the sketch line with maybe some little differences here and there if I feel like I want to correct something I think looks off.

Step 3.png

  • Base Color

After my linearts, I then color in the linearts with a darker neutral color than my background. This is be my base color to layer masks over. Sometimes I just use the primary color of whatever character or item I am drawing as the base color if it is the only thing in the drawing at least in the foreground. I use a wizard selection tool to select in the lines (or select outside the lines then invert the selection to cover what I need to color into with the least amount of gaps.) Then I touch up any gaps I see.

Step 4.png

  • Primary Colors/Masking Colors

I add primary colors for each character/item I plan on coloring in detail and do each color in its own layer, and...

Step 5.png

...then I mask the layers so that the colors take into the shape of the base color. No need to be exactly perfect to how you draw this in, except in spots where you want to avoid certain colors from overlapping.

Step 6.png

  • From there, I add in other color details to the characters or items.

Just like the descriptions here, as you can see the process gets easier as you go along. It just may get more tedious sometimes the longer you draw on a single pic. Breaks are a good thing. lol

Step 7.png

  • Detail Colors

Here, I just add the colors to the miscellaneous items such as the table and pizza. If I'm doing a FULL DETAIL drawing, I would be adding shadows and highlights to the foreground after this phase. But that will be for another pic that requires it!

Step 8.png

  • Background Lineart

I can either fade the foreground a bit or turn on the sketch layer first, then I use that as a guide as I begin to work on the background.

Step 9.png

  • Background Color

I color in the background and again, if this was a FULL DETAIL pic, I would be adding shading and highlights to the background like I would do with the foreground.

Step 10.png

  • Final Check/Final Result

Then finally, I turn back up the layers that were faded. I look over the pic to make any final edits that need to be done (like the chair leg in this pic was edited near the end for one example) or find any details that are missing (which even a few I may not even catch the tiniest missed detail until after it has been posted. lol)

And voilà! My whole process of drawing...at least for flat color pics. ;) And of course, depending on whatever program you use, how you achieve these tasks may be a little different.

Hope you enjoy the artwork and the view of my drawing process!

This is awesome and totally children friendly too. I can just imagine using the drawing to tell them a story that teaches them a valuable lesson. Friends are important, sharing is just as important. The less selfish people we have in the world, the better the world would be.

I like how you showed the step by step in details. The end result is amazing. Your use of colours is great. I love the colours you chose.

Thank you for the compliments! I tend to like having my drawing pop with colors. And I agree, friends are important as well as the act of sharing and giving because seeing others happy is worth more than just making yourself happy.

Excellent post, bleuxwolf. I really like that you detailed all of your creation process from the beginning to the end. And I'm sure your client is pretty happy with the final result ^_^.

Congratulations on your first curie vote :).

Thank you Scrawly! And thank you for the suggestion of posting WIPs along with the final product. :) This post definitely shows how folks like to see details like this. I definitely will do more post like this. And to think I didn't expect this huge of a turnout. lol And yeah, he and the others whose characters are in the pic absolutely love the pic!

How beautiful and neat is this step by step, a lovely job. I loved the way you wrote the whole process, the colors you put on the characters hit the nail on the head, they are very funny and they fit very well. Congratulations for your curie vote very deserved !! Abig hug @bleuxwolf

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the work as much as I enjoyed doing this for the client and sharing this with y'all. I will certainly show more step details like this in future postings as well. :)

Hello bleuxwolf,
Your work is wonderful. Super adorable your people and fun eating pizza. I love them. The colors you used are perfect. Very good as you show the step by step of your drawing. You reminded me when I go with my friends to eat pizza on Sundays and they cut it like that. You have a great talent. My niece loves your work just like I do. Have a great day.

Thank you @yeninsfer. Happy to share my content and process with y'all! Also glad to hear your niece enjoys my artworks as well. I hope this one in particular will help y'all if either of y'all draw for a hobby or even more than that.

Wow, this is awesome. Your work has made me falling in love with art. The selected colors are great and if with the equipment, the guidelines are vividly explained

Thank you! I'm happy to see you really enjoy the work. :)

This reminds me of an animated series from Russia that I was watching when I was a child. It was about a wolf and a rabbit. If I remember correctly the wolf looked like yours :) Your painting is perfect for kids. I like it as nowadays there are so many violent figures and I feel like the kind of paintings that I remember from my childhood are almost non existent. Thank you for bringing back some memories :)

You're welcome! I'm glad bring in some friendly cartoon animals. :) And I think I know what show you're talking about. Ну, погоди! or Nu, pogodi! which ever way they call it here. lol

Exactly!! Thank you for reminding me! 😉

No problem! I've actually drew the wolf, or Volk in english name, before. In fact, I might post him up here real soon. ;)

This is really cool @bleuxwolf! The wolves look very happy there :) I appreciate your time in showing us the step-by-step tutorial of your cartoon drawing and I am especially intrigued by the use of base colour and primary colour to mask the layers and lines, never knew. This will look very nice as a poster in a pizza place :) You are very good with cartoons. Do you draw for comics?

Thank you Marblely! Actually, it's supposed to be a meerkat, hyena and a goat. lol But regardless, glad you enjoy seeing the process. I don't draw for comics, but I have drawn comics before personally and even as commissions. :)

Oooppsss so sorry. My brain kept thinking of wolves :D
Yes yes, I enjoyed it very much.. Something for me to try. I'd probably try with stick man first :D Ah that is nice. Your cartoon is so cute!! I would love to read your comic :) Happy weekend there @bleuxwolf :)

Thank you. :) And well, I have my personal and commission comics posted on other sites. My personal one can be in the mature (not NSFW though) rating at times for language so I don't know If I would post it here to keep things G to PG if that's what the audience prefers.

And happy weekend to you to!

It's weekend again! :)
Ah, I think you can go ahead to post anything because we have the NFSW setting. You will have your audience, whichever rating it is.

Yep it is! And maybe. lol I'll probably keep things PG for now though but maybe I'll post it in the future.
