5. Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney is an English singer-songwriter. He is mostly recognized for his work on the bass guitar in the rock band the Beatles. After the band’s break up in 1970, Paul started his solo career and started a band with his wife Linda, called the Wings. After his ground-breaking contributions to music he was knighted in 1997. He was also a two-time inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (for his solo career, and for being a member of the Beatles), and is considered to be one of the most successful composers and performers of all time.
4. Albert King
Albert Nelson, also known professionally as Albert King, was an American blues guitarist which helped influence many other blues guitarists. Besides his guitar playing, King is known for his soulful vocals, which created a dramatic and deep sound that is imitated by blues and also rock vocalists. He was also inducted posthumously in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in May 2013, 21 years after his death.
3. Kurt Cobain
Kurt Donald Cobain was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and poet. Him and his friend Krist Novoselic started the band Nirvana in 1987. After they signed with the label DGC Records, the band broke into the mainstream with the success of their second album Nevermind, which featured the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Nirvana was considered to be one of the biggest bands that helped shape the grunge movement in the 90’s.
2. Tony Iommi
Next up is Anthony Frank Iommi. He was an English songwriter, producer and guitarist. His guitar playing was different from other guitarists, because of his injury as a teenager in the factory, in which he lost tips of his ring and middle finger. He is most known for his involvement with the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Besides Sabbath, he also had a solo career and created a band with the rock legend Ronnie James Dio, called Heaven & Hell.
1. Jimi Hendrix
And lastly we have James Marshall Hendrix aka Jimi Hendrix. Jimi was an American rock guitarist and singer, and is considered to be the greatest instrumentalist in rock music. He broke into the mainstream with his band The Jimi Hendrix Experience, with such hits as: “Purple Haze”, “The Wind Cries Mary”, “Hey Joe” and his cover of the Bob Dylan song “All Along the Watchtower”. Before and after his death at the age of 27, Hendrix received several awards including: Rolling Stone Performer of the year 1968, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1992 and UK music Hall of Fame in 2005.
