22KM NOODLE SOUP
Recently, after sending my 3 year old son for Christmas Party at his playschool I decided to have something different for breakfast than the normal hang outs hearby. So, I drove 22 KM up noth of Kota Kinabalu City Centre in a an area called Sepanggar just for a bowl of noodle soup. It's not just a noodle soup but a beef noodle soup. And not just a typical beef noodle soup but the Nyuk Pau Menggatal Ngau Chap beef noodle soup! Famous locally from the time I was first introduced to it way back in 1993! From then it has grown into several branches owned by family members and one or two sold as franchises.
Kedai Kopi Nyuk Pau Baru 2 in Sepanggar is the latest branch I knew of after being told by a good friend of mine, Adrian Anthony, who told me the soup here is "kaw" (thicker) than other branches. This is one of the reasons why I came to check it out. One thing about Nyuk Pau beef noodle soup is, no one place is exactly the same. The core taste or the Nyuk Pau trademark taste is generally the same in all branches, however, different pots and different hands could make a difference in taste that only a Nyuk Pau lover could detect. And Adrian was certainly right in this taste. Thank you, my friend for introducing me to this new outlet.
The thick soup is an authentic rich beef broth of secret family recipe refined over at least three generations of Nyuk Pau Ngau Chap. I haven't found any similar taste beef noodle soup anywhere else in Sabah or even Malaysia that would come close to Nyuk Pau recipe. If you have tasted Nyuk Pau Ngau Chap once you will remember the core trademark taste forever that you can easily guess it if you are having the soup somewhere else. The taste is so rich and unique that even a novice can differentiate a Nyuk Pau and another beef noodle soup.
Like any other Nyuk Pau Menggatal Ngau Chap branches, Kedai Kopi Nyuk Pau Baru 2 only serves beef noodle soup with choices of different types of noodles and several combinations of beef parts - sliced beef, beef balls, beef stew, tendon and tripe. Other than that you can have fried beef "lihing" (rice wine) too. On the side this shop also have Chicken Rice on the menu - I guessed it meant for that one single person who doesn't take beef among a group of friends who won by majority "Today we eat Nyuk Pau Ngau Chap".
Even the chicken rice looks sarcastically delicious but I stick to my old time favourite of "mihun" (rice noodle) with a mix of everthing! And a nice cold Lemon Tea ice to balance it off.
This type of food is not to be taken daily - ask any with HBP (High Blood Pressure), high cholesterol level or gout. The last time I had Nyuk Pau Ngau Chap was about four months ago. So, when the bowl came, @blackwoodborneo had to bow his head down and admire the simple presentation but generous tasty looking food, with eyes closed and sense of smell opened wide to embrace the aromatic "steem" engulfing his face long enough to be momentarily hypnotized and register that unique Nyuk Pau taste once again. The 22 KM noodle soup is suddenly only 22 cm in front. Now that is what I called a worthwhile journey!
The soup was remarkably rich, tasty and "kaw"- thick in beeffy flavour taste! Every piece of the sliced meat, tendon, tripe, beef stew and beef balls were tender that even the toothless would approved. By the way, the beef balls are not the real beff balls but minced meat mixed with flour and shaped like little balls slightly bigger than marbles.
Among all the Nyuk Pau Menggatal outlets in town, Kedai Kopi Nyuk Pau Baru 2 Sepanggar would probably be the best one after the original shop in Menggatal town itself. For beef noodle or Ngau Chap lovers out there, I can assure you a guaranteed satisfaction beyond your wallet. This is also a good remedy for hangover which is also the main reason why it is so well known in Sabah.
If I were to boast about soup noodle in Sabah, the Nyuk Pau Menggatal Ngau Chap would certainly be one of it. It was worth 22 KM of my journey to Kedai Kopi Nyuk Pau Baru 2 Sepanggar, and for the 22 KM journey back a take away is a must for 22 KM noodle soup.
