Yamashiro Restaurant, Hollywood is a 100 year old palace straight out of Japan.
Perched on a hill 250 feet above Hollywood Boulevard is the amazing Yamashiro Restaurant. The name means "Mountain Palace" in Japanese . It was built in 1911 and is an exact replica of a palace in the mountains of Kyoto in Japan. During the 1920's this was the home of "The 400 Club", which was an exclusive social club for the Hollywood elite during this era.
The building was nearly destroyed as a result of WWII. Due to anti-Japanese sentiment at the time it was first vandalized, then painted over, and then converted to a Boys' Military school. It was nearly torn down and destroyed in 1948, however thankfully it survived and has been restored to its former splendor.
The palace sits on top of a hill in Hollywood, among 12 acres of landscaped gardens including koi ponds, waterfalls and pagodas. It affords a spectacular view of Hollywood below.
Since the 1970's it has been a restaurant, and often hosts Hollywood's rich and famous, as well as hosting many fil-wrap parties and celebrations. It has also appeared in many films and tv series. If you are a fan of Gone in 60 Seconds with Nicholas Cage, you may recognize it.
YAMASHIRO IN "GONE IN 60 SECONDS"
I was lucky enough to be taken here by a Thai friend residing in California, and I knew he was excited for us to experience Yamashiro. Unfortunately for us, all the tables with a view over the city were full ,but we had an equally amazing spot inside the Japanese Courtyard.
I have eaten in luxurious restaurants on most continents, but I can honestly say this was as impressive as anything I had seen. The pictures don't even begin to do justice to the grandness of this venue and you really must immerse yourself in the setting to get the feeling.
THE FOOD
The food was every bit as good as the setting, with some of the best sashimi I have eaten in a long time. Each dish was fresh and full of flavour. Apparently they have gotten some poor reviews for the food, but it wasn't evident the night we went, everything was perfect.
THE VERDICT
It's not a cheap night out so expect to splurge if you choose to visit, but what you will get is an amazing meal, in a magical setting and memories that will last forever.
