West Sumatra is one of the provinces in Indonesia located on the island of Sumatra with Padang as its capital. As the name implies, the province occupies along the western coast of central Sumatra, the Bukit Barisan plateau to the east, and a number of islands off the coast such as the Mentawai Islands. From north to south, the province with an area of 42,297.30 km² is bordered by four provinces, namely North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, and Bengkulu.
West Sumatra is home to ethnic Minang kabau, although the Minang kabau indigenous territory itself is wider than the administrative area of West Sumatra Province today. This province has a population of 4,846,909 people with the majority of Muslims. The province consists of 12 districts and 7 municipalities with administrative subdivisions after sub-districts in all districts (except Mentawai Islands district) named as nagari, West Sumatra Province Name originated in the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) period, Sumatra is Sumatra's west. Then with the increasing political and economic influence of the VOC, until the 18th century this administrative region has covered the western coastal areas of Sumatra from Barus to Inderapura.
Along with the fall of the Pagaruyung Kingdom, and Dutch involvement in the Padri War, the Dutch East Indies government began to make Minangkabau inland as part of Pax Nederlandica, a region under Dutch supervision, and the Minangkabau region was divided into Residentie Padangsche Benedenlanden and Residentie Padangsche Bovenlanden.
Furthermore, in the development of the Dutch East Indies colonial administration, this region is incorporated in Goverment Sumatra's West, including the territory of Resident Bengkulu which was recently handed over to the Dutch. Then expanded again by entering Tapanuli and Singkil. But in 1905, the Tapanuli region was upgraded to Resident Tapanuli, while the Singkil area was given to Resident Aceh. Then in 1914, Goverment Sumatra's West kust, was downgraded < HTML>
