地球末日戰|谷哥点名#5 /World war Z | Google challenge #5

再一次參加 @jubi 擧辨的谷哥点名活动今次是電影~

以下內容包含劇情,敬請留意!!

作為科學家有什麼比愛情動作片更能吸引我眼睛？

當然就是喪屍對人的愛情科幻動作片, 而受到職業病發影響, 我通常對電影中的科學都有一定要求 XD

不過叫科幻愛情動作片就當然是有些不科學的地方, 所以像實驗一樣，先作出一些假設:比如世界就是能有東西(細菌、病毒、不知名東西)可以把人變成喪屍。而喪屍變身時間也不必考慮到什麼血液要一分鐘才能運行全身之類 (電影的喪屍只須十多秒), 又或者主角為什麼長得這麼帥又聰明再來個主角一定活到最後的外掛等等…

電影中有2點和科學有關的我特別喜歡:
第一是喪屍只是為了傳播病毒，不會攻擊那些病入膏肓身體殘障的人:這一點有些像噬菌體(會感染細菌的病毒)的
超感染免疫性。簡單來說就是同一隻細菌(一個宿主)只能受同一種病毒感染一次, 在受感染後不會再被同一種病毒傳染。雖然電影的喪屍病毒只針對身體健全的人,但暗地裏也包含了在傳染病學的弱肉強食，適者生存概念。良禽(菌)擇木(人)而棲吧。這概念我第一次在喪屍電影看到,亦告訴我們如果真的有弱, 喪屍危機,弱一點的可能死不了。XD

第二點
故事完結前，世界的安全區是在北上的加拿大
這是説晚了病毒有溫度屏障 (其中一種天然屏障, 有利防止傳染病傅播)。因為很多傳染病的病原體都有傳播媒介, 像登革熱要蚊子, 作為傳播媒介。如果傳播媒介在某些環境生傳不了, 傳染病的病原體就很難找到宿主了。所以只要住在喪屍受不了的環境, 人類就可以安全地等待反擊的機會~

地球末日戰雖然沒有像28日後或者是屍殺列車/屍速列車
那麼細緻地描寫人類的黑暗一面,但在背後的科學也算比較專業 (那些實驗室簡直是夢幻級 XD)。

唯一我受不了的是為什麼一羣科學家沒人想出Brad Pitt 可以在病原體存放庫,以紙張向鏡頭問問題,而其他人用電話響的次數來作出是或否的指示…

So what can it be more eye catching movie, apart from the “love-action” movies for a scientist??

Of course, that will be the zombie to man love, Sci-Fic, action movies, and because of my job nature, I usually get picky to some of the science behind the movie.

However, as we are talking about sci-fic love action movie, there will be something that is not going to be scientifically real, at least to our existing known facts. We can first agree on some background settings for examples, like there are things (bacteria, virus, unknown) on this earth that can turn human to zombies, we will ignore the fact that blood take around 1 minute to circulate our whole body (while the zombies in the movie only takes around 10 seconds to turn. But why is the main character so handsome and can always survived till the end…

There are two relatively scientific parts I like about it in the movie:
First, Zombies attack people to transmit the disease/pathogens. This reminds me of the super infection immunity of bacteriophage (viruses that infect bacteria) upon the infected host. Or to put it simple, for 1 bacteria (host), they are only susceptible to the infection of 1 species of bacteriophages. The infected bacteria will no longer get infected by other bacteriophage of the same species. Although in the movie, the zombies only attack individuals that are healthy and fit, but this also brings out the fact that there are the “survival of the fittest” concepts in host selection for the virus to propagate well.

The 2nd part is that at the end, where Brad Pitt went to the safe sanctuary in Canada.
This hinted that the virus has a temperature barrier (or natural barrier, which is advantageous for prevention of disease spreading). A lot of pathogens require vectors to infect their new host, just like the case of Dengue Fever requires mosquito as the vector for the disease transmission. So when the vector cannot survive, then it would be difficult to pathogens to reach their source. That’s why we just need to find places where zombies cannot tolerate, then we can safely wait out the pandemic and wait for revenge.

Even though World War Z wasn’t as descriptive as 28 days later or Train to Busan, for the dark sides of the human acts. But the science behind the movie was somewhat interesting and accurate.

And the Only thing that I find it irritating, was that why can't a bunch of scientists and Brad Pitt could not figure a way to communicate between the pathogen vault. They could have communicated if Brad Pitt just write down the questions that he would like to ask and show it to the camera. The people behind the camera can then just ring the phone for different duration to signify a yes/no answer.
