Fight the federal drone program with Mushrooms!
The Problem;
If you have not heard, the Federal government has recently lifted drone laws for 10 "lucky" county's across the United States. These drones will be completing various tasks for their respective missions. I live in Lee county, FL. a link to the local article will be below. The gist is , We have a high density population of mosquitoes in our area. They are saying it is because of the mangroves. With all the mosquito transmitted diseases nowadays this gives them enough authority to act without the consent of the people. they will be monitoring the area with a 1500lb drone with infrared cameras. I did not hear of this until it was announced about how "lucky" we are to be able to participate in this program. And then, that was it. No new information has come out.
It is a slippery slope, and my fear is once these devices are approved to be in the sky monitoring the mosquitoes they might as well monitor the people and big brother gets another chain on the collar. If we defeat the problem to begin with then their is no reason for them to monitor. I know it probably wont work like that but the more we can take care of ourselves the less we need them to watch over us...
The Solution:
It has been my observation over the last few year the quality of the water declining. Lake Okeechobee in Florida over the last 5 years especially does water releases from the levies. This water is infested with fecal matter, pesticides and fertilizer from the farming done in that area. This water is released down the calusahatchee river which flows out through lee county at Fort Myers beach/ Sanibel area. Now my belief is that all this tainted fresh water is killing the saltwater grass that small fish need to survive. Their is literally almost no sea grass left in my area. The water is brown and pungent with dead plant life constantly. the food chain has broken. theirs no see grasses, no feeder fish and finally no medium- larger fish. being an avid fisherman in this area my entire life ive never gone so many consecutive months with catching next to nothing. It was the last week fishing at Four Mile Cove Ecological park in the Alligator Creek Mangrove trail for 6 hours with no bite it hit me.Their are no fish. Thats why the mosquitoes are bad. Fish like snapper redfish and snook would eat countless larvae per day in the stagnate mangroves . The solution, clean the water so the grass can grow and the food chain can catch back up.
I saw many of Paul Stamets presentations talking about various ways you cleaned the environment with oyster mushrooms. I thought that this may be the start of the solution to cleaning the water in and around Okeechobee before it reaches into the bay. I know that this would be a huge feat but to have a solution it has to having a starting point. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to contribute to the cause, all proceeds of this channel will go to the preservation efforts in the lee county area.
