Beer Review - Thai Style White IPA

in #beer8 years ago

Going to delve into a beer style that is one of my least favorite, the India Pale Ale, commonly known as the IPA. I have tried a number of IPAs and have never been a fan although I have tried a few that I don't mind. It would be a rare IPA that I would try more than once. But I also have limited selection here in my home town and in Montana in general, so I will try the random IPA.

Stats

  • Brewed by: Upslope Brewing Company, Boulder, Colorado
  • Alcohol Content: 6.5% by volume
  • IBU: 33
  • Company Description: Drawing inspiration from all over the globe, our Thai Style White IPA is an artful combination of uncommon, yet carefully chosen ingredients. Brewed using Belgian Wit yeast, hopped like an American IPA and infused with seven Asian-inspired spices, this beer is far from traditional. The sharp, juicy citrus notes of the hops interplay with the unique Thai spice blend to create an unexpected, one of a kind refreshment.

Presentation
Upslope has a consistent labeling style, pretty bland, like you see on the beer here, the cans are generally one color with an offsetting color for the print and Upslope logo shape. This does make them easy to spot as an Upslope beer though. All the Upslope beers I have seen have been in cans. The ingredients are prominently displayed on the side of the can.

THE Beer

  • Appearance: This beer has a bright straw color, slightly cloudy with a decent near white foam upon pouring. The foam dissipated relatively quickly.
  • Aroma: The aroma given off by this beer was a tropical citrus, slightly spicy.
  • Taste: I thought the taste was overpowered by the ginger and coriander, and it was actually kind of bland. Could also taste the lemongrass presence. It was not bitter at all (with the low IBU of 33, that makes sense).
  • Mouthfeel: The feel of this beer was slightly carbonated, but smooth in the mouth. It had a citrus finish.
  • Drinkability: Pretty drinkable, I am not a fan of ginger so that was a bit off-putting for me but as far as a beer, this one would be a good summer time drinker (I should mention it is a seasonal summer beer produced by Upslope).

Rating and Overall Thoughts

As I have stated often if you have read some of my previous reviews and above, I am not an IPA fan and would never buy a six pack of IPA to drink. However, some are better tasting to me than others, especially when they are less bitter. This beer was not bad, and if not for the ginger taste, I may have rated it higher. I gave this beer a 2.75 on Uptappd where it has an overall rating of 3.5.

2.75/5

I would probably agree with you. I love how craft brewers continue to push the frontier with new and exciting ideas, like adding the whole Thai spice lineup into a beer, but I doubt I would venture past one of these. I like when they have these kind of offerings at beer shares and festivals though, lets me experience it and then move on without getting burned on buying the sixer.

Agreed! Feel free to follow me, I will be posting more reviews, including one tonight.

Followed, I'll keep on the lookout.
