Beer Review - Belgian Sour
If you read my reviews, you may be aware I am not super fond of belgian beers and lean towards stouts and porters as my favorite beer types. Well I am stepping outside my box on this review. A Belgian sour ale!! Say what? Yes, seemed interesting, had some cherries on it. Will he like it? Lets see shall we.
Brouwerij De Brabandere - Petrus Aged Red
Stats
- Brewery: Brouwerij De Brabandere - Bavikhove, Belgium
- Alcohol Content: 8.5% by volume
- IBUs: 18
- Company Description: Petrus Aged red is a blend of 15% Petrus Aged Pale, pure foeder beer that has been aged for 2 years in oak foeders, and 85% double brown with sour cherries. For the fruit beer lover, but with an ideal sweet-sour balance. Full-bodied, fruity and refreshingly sour at the same time! (Thank goodness their website had english on it. )
Presentation
This beer comes in a 12 oz dark bottle with a front label, smaller back label and a wrap around neck label. I was a bit disappointing that the front label was wrinkled. An attractive label none the less, I liked the gray background with the red and white lettering. Im guessing this beer was made specifically for the US market since all the wording is english.
The Beer
-Appearance: Deep dark reddish, mahogany color with a one finger khaki foam head that dissipated pretty quickly.
- Aroma: Had a strong aroma of dark cherries.
- Taste/Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated, almost effervescent in the mouth. Had a sweet, cherry taste, thin bodied, with slight to moderate sour finish, most tart than sour.
- Drinkability: Was pretty drinkable for me, not overly sour, the tartness was a nice finish. Pretty high abv so watch how many you have at a single sitting but they will go down pretty well.
Rating and Final Thoughts
I gave this a decent rating of 3.75 on Untappd, where a friend rated it the same and it's overall rating with over 52k ratings was 3.64. I liked it, probably my favorite sour that I have had. Not overly sour, I liked the cherry tartness. But I like cherries a lot, cherry pie is my favorite. :)
3.75/5.0
Thanks for taking a look at my review of this beer. Let me know if you have tried this one and what you thought of it.
Cheers!
Sounds like a decent sour.
It was good, seems to be pretty widely distributed so you might see it around your area
I have only had a couple sours but they were both tasty enough. The fruity one I had recently was better than the other. I think the good fruit flavor covered the sour a bit and made it very drinkable.
this one was not as sour as most and I like cherries so a winner. Big Heads Bottle shop has it
Cherries, yeek. That would be a challenge for me, I hate em!
how can you not like Cherries, they are fabulous. All dark and red!
