whats wrong with the world today
so we've all been hearing about the hurricane in Texas and Alabama and how deadly and devastating it has been, my thoughts go to the affected in those areas, but has anyone heard of the massive floods and monsoon occurring in south east Asia?
approximately 86 trillion ( a trillion is 1,000,000,000,000) litres of water has fallen on Houston as a result of hurricane Harvey which is a massive amount in itself, but if you compare it to the estimated 30 quadrillion ( a quadrillion is 1,000,000,000,000,000 )that has been dumped on Bangladesh alone it seems minuscule.
With up to 43 deaths so far as a result of hurricane Harvey when you compare it to the upwards of 1200 deaths in India Nepal and Bangladesh it seems fairly minor.
So why arent we hearing about it?
its simple, the western world and media doesn't seem to care. it seems we put such a massive value on life but that only extends to those who look like us or speak our language. In Australia i haven't seen a single piece of mainstream news about the south east Asia floods but almost non stop reporting on the issues facing Houston.
The same goes for terrorism, whenever something happens in Paris or Melbourne or London its non stop reports for days/weeks, but terrorism is occurring all over the world everyday and we never hear about it unless we go out of our way to find it. Is this because its so prevalent in other parts of the world that its superfluous to report on it? or is there really some underlying racism (for want of a better word) going on.
Why do we care what happens in Paris so much more than what happens in Lebanon? Why is London more important than Afghanistan?
With so much death and destruction in the world its hard to look at it as a positive place, i just wish we could put as much emphasis on the struggles of those in developing or war-torn nations as we do on our first world issues.
After all we're all human, we're all a brother, sister, father, son, daughter or mother and where we live and how we speak/look shouldn't have influence over that.
My thoughts go out to those affected by any sort of pain or suffering no matter where you are in the world, it may seem like no one cares but we do, and one day maybe the media will get their sh*t together and show us everything not just the select bits and pieces that get the most ratings.
