WHO WAS THE REAL TOM SAWYER?
Tom sawyer had to get a name.
I wonder if anyone knows where the name for the book character came from.
It is a wonderful story that happened and it was all about a fireman.
This man was a firefighter on board a ship with a lot of passengers.
He really took his job seriously, and one day the boat caught fire then he found out that only one of the rescue boats were working.
The fire was too big for him to put out but he tried his best and saved 90 passengers on the boat.
One day he was talking to someone who was writing a book, and did not know what to call the character in his book.
The fireman Tom Sawyer told him his story and he was so impressed that he immediately named his book character after him.
They became good friends after that. I think it is wonderful to know where the name came from as we all read those books with passion.
Twain named his fictional character after a San Francisco fireman whom he met in June 1863. The real Tom Sawyer was a local hero, famous for rescuing 90 passengers after a shipwreck. The two remained friendly during Twain's three-year stay in San Francisco, often drinking and gambling together.
Hope you enjoyed this and have a wonderful day from me.

After all these years of reading the stories to the Kids and Grandkids, it is good to find out where the name came from. Thank you
