History of Indian Cuisine in Japan
There is no definitive information about when Indian cuisine spread in Japan, but the Japanese started consuming curry as home cooking sometime around 1860 due to the influence of the British. The taste of the curry is different from the curry from India. However, the number of Indian cuisine restaurants grew in Japan in 1990 and Indian cuisine became popular. Indian cuisine uses ingredients that are believed to add beauty and improve health, so that Indian cuisine is becoming more popular in Japan.
Indian Curry
Indian curry consists of a mixture of various herbs which are then processed into roux or curry sauce. This way of cooking becomes very well known in Japan, so people think Indian curry is a curry that has a flavor with sharp taste. However, the Japanese-made Indian curry is slightly modified from the original by adjusting the sweetness and viscosity of the sauce to suit the tastes of Japanese society. Kari keema (curry made from minced meat and vegetables are mashed) and chicken curry is a popular curry in Japan.
