What Your Pupils can Tell You

It is another wonderful day and the start of hopefully an amazing weekend to come, and we are glad to once again have this opportunity to share another interesting lesson with you and we do hope that what you learn today will be with you.

Today we are going to look at our pupils and a few tricks that can be done with them. When we say tricks we do not mean you doing magic tricks though, no, we talking about you being able to use the pupil as a diagnostic tool or first aid should the need arises.

The Pupil

The pupil is the hole in the middle of the iris of the eye. It is the part of the eye that you see black when looking directly into someone's eyes. It is surrounded by the iris which is normally brown however it may be gray or bluish in others, especially people from the eastern world. This is a sign of ocular albinism though however thus another discussion for another day.

So the pupil is a major component of the ocular media through which light gets into the eye, and it plays a lot of role in the regulation of the amount of light entering the eye. This is done however with the help of the surrounding iris which has dilator and sphincter muscles to help close it up or open it up.

The tricks

The iris has nerve fiber endings from the brain or some of the 12 cranial nerves which enables it to take information directly from the brain and also send some to the brain. There are also some connections to other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata.

When there is too much light available which may cause harm to the eye and the retina the pupil constricts and becomes small allowing only small amounts of light to pass through. You may observe this with a flashlight on your friend. When this light goes away the pupil dilates or goes back to its original size. This is one of the simple tricks doctors use to tell if your eyes or retina are healthy before surgery.

When someone is drunk or has taken in a substantial amount of alcohol you may confirm it by taking a look at their pupils. You may realize that even with a flashlight the pupils are quite dilated or bigger than usual especially if you are familiar with the person. The opposite applies to individuals who may be taking hard drugs or smoking weed. They would have very small-sized pupils, what we call pinpoints.

Well, some also say that when people are in love or love your presence erroneously they tend to have dilated pupils around you, that is yet to be confirmed however you may check it out and give us your feedback.
