Cycle Rickshaw + Granny = Fun (Photo Selection)
The Netherlands is a bicycle nation. In Amsterdam you see them everywhere and with all the tourists riding around it’s a day job to pass the street safely. If you wear a helmet while riding a bike, cannot transport multiple people on your bike, cannot transport a crate of beer per bike, and can't drive without your hands we'll probably laugh at you. Riding a bike here is like learning to tie your shoelaces or learning how to swim.
If a bike ride is not your cup of tea you can also enjoy one without putting in effort yourself. You can hop on the back for a slightly uncomfortable ride. People carry around a lot of people and the weirdest things on a bike here. Or! You can take a cycle rickshaw.
I happen to have a fairly old grandmother. She is 86 years old and her knees aren’t what they used to be. We are very close since she used to live two doors down for most of my childhood. She still lives in the South and isn’t really accustomed to the big city life. A few years ago we took her on a canal tour in Amsterdam. I really wanted to do something like that again but because she can’t walk long distances anymore our options are very limited. She’s not fast enough for public transport, she can’t bike. We could take a cab downtown, but after that we would have to walk...
I thought it couldn't be done.
But then it hit me!
Let’s put my granny in a cycle rickshaw and do a city centre tour! Awesome!
Last Sunday the day was finally here! I’ve been checking the weather for weeks and finally the weather was good enough and I had the time to pick her up. I invited my mum and stepdad too and of course Robby came along and we took a tour through the city with two cabs. It was great!
We rode through the expensive shopping street called P.C. Hooftstraat. We saw Museumsquare, rode underneath Rijksmuseum, passed canals over pretty bridges.
We went all the way over to the Amstel, where we saw the Hermitage, theatre Carré and the very fancy Amstelhotel.
I offered her a joint and a spot behind one of the red light district windows to earn some cash on the side, but she politely declined ;)
Ah :) I can cross that off my bucket list! <3
