Meaning of food substance?
Food substance are food being eaten by animals to enable them survive and provide energy for their daily activities
All living organisms need food to grow strong and healthy. Plant can manufacture their food through the process of photosynthesis,hence they are called autotrophs.and the ones that depend on plant directly or indirectly are heterotroph.
Animal are classified into 3 namely:
Carnivores animals: They are those animals that feed on only flesh. Examples are dog, snake,cat, and, lizard .
Herbivores animals: They are those animals that feed mainly on plants.Examples are sheep,goat, rabbit,and so on.
Omnivores animals: They are those animals that feed both on plant and animals.
Classification of food substance
Food taken in by animals can be classified into 7 groups of food substance. namely;
Carbohydrates
Protein
Fat and oil
Mineral salts
Water and
Roughages
Carbohydrates:
It is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
The ratio of hydrogen is 2:1 as in the case of water . Examples are yam,rice,maize,bread, and millet.etc
Types of carbohydrates
They are mainly three types of carbohydrates. They are:
Monosaccharides: They are mainly called simple sugar. The are the simplest sugar and have only one unit of simple sugar. Examples are Glucose, fructose, etc.
Disaccharide(reducing sugar): These contains two units of simple sugar. Examples are Maltose,and Lactose
Polysaccharide(complex sugar): They consist of more than two sugar or several simple sugar joined together . Example are chitin, starch, cellulose and many others.
Importance of carbohydrates
- Carbohydrates provide energy require by animals for their daily activities.
- it also provides heat, during oxidation.
Proteins: protein are composed of carbon,hydrogen,oxygen, nitrogen. Example are Milk, eggs, meat, groundnut, beans, eggs etc.

Importance of protein
- it is used for the growth of Young ones
- it aids in reproduction.
- it is used to repair worn out tissue.
Fats and oil:
Fat and oil are also called lipids. fats and oil are composed of carbon hydrogen and little oxygen.Example are butter, fish,chess and margin. etc

Importance of fats and oil
They provide fat soluble vitamins.
Mineral salts:Animals require a lot of mineral salts for various activities in the body.
Classes are, Calcium, Magnesium, potassium, sulphur, chlorine and iodine.
Vitamins:They are organic food substance require by man and other animals.
Sources are Vitamin A(retinol)
Vitamin B(thiamine)
Vitamin B2 (riboflavin).And so on.

Water:water is composed of two element which are Hydrogen and oxygen.

Rivers
Rain water and pounds
Importance of water
It is act as a medium of transportation for nutrients.
It is necessary for digestion of food.

Roughages
Roughages consist of indigestible fibrosis material derived from vegetables, fruit, carbohydrates and protein.
In conclusion these is to show that we should know the type of food to eat and make us grow strong and healthy.
