Self portrait from Adrian Duttons painting classes
Back for the 3rd lesson in Adrian Duttons oil painting painting course and this time I’m applying the things learnt in Lesson 1 (brush to canvas marking) and Lesson 2 ( colour mixing) to a self portrait
Of cause it was absolutely knackering as usual and I found myself squinting,!stepping back and waving my brush around to gauge facial points to the point where I felt i might have looking like I was dancing. I’m glad that I had already tried some of Adrian’s lesson 2 teachings with acrylic paint at life drawing on Tuesday. The only difference here was that on Tuesday I painted in my usual broad brush style and layered up on the image itself. For this piece I stayed much more true to what Adrian had advised us in lesson 1 and found started to find something natural emerge. As the lesson went on it became clear that I wasn’t really drawing myself but more so the colour of the light that hits the surface of my face
Whilst doing this piece I found myself noticing patches of ochre and red scattered across areas of the face which would then disappear if I looked again. I’m obviously not happy with the nose length but I’m dead chuffed that my obsession with it had EMEA the it almost touches that horizon between the picture and reality. I scrubbed out my eyes at one point and so wish we had more time. Glad I didn’t though - it’s all bloody learning.
Biggest learning today was that you can paint so that things in the painting almost push out of the painting. This gives depth
