Unleashing the retro nerd!

Well... I don't know if anyone else grew up in the early 90s. My one and only console was the SNES (actually... I lie, I also had a brief time with a NES and now the Switch) at the time... and I have so many great memories of playing games on this old machine. More recently, Nintendo released a retro version of the venerable console... but with updated hardware. This means that it looks the same, but is much smaller... and there is no need for cartridges all over the place!

Sadly, that also removes the time honoured way of "fixing" console cartridge connections by blowing on them... (probably didn't do anything... but it sure felt good!). My dear brother remembered how much of a nerd I am, and got me this as a gift over summer!

Anyway... all the gamers from this era will recognise a lot of the titles that are included direct in the box... Contra... F-Zero... Street Fighter 2... Zelda... MarioWorld... the original Mario Kart! Wow... these are all games that are going to bring back great childhood memories... in fact, I can't wait to play some of these with my oldest girl (o even my wife if she is interested....).

I do wonder if the nostalgia will be too strong... and if the games will actually live up to the memories... normally, I do avoid revisiting the older games... as I prefer to have the happy memories, rather than having fond memories being shattered by hard reality of limited software/hardware.

Anyway... this will be a nice accompaniment to the potential night of gaming... (well, first setting up the console... but I don't expect that to be as difficult as it once used to be... I remember having to plug the old original console in a really really old CRT television... with the difficulty of finding a free channel and dealing with annoying interference and loose connectors)... this appears to be a simple USB port for the power... and a HDMI plug for the video output... surely, nothing can go wrong... aside from the fact that I don't think that I have a spare HDMI port on the TV... perhaps that is a great excuse for a new TV or a monitor!

Anyway, some quality chocolates will ease the pain of set up... or just make everything more fun!

Definitely nostalgic for you, I mean, I am a little bit too young to even know them when it was their time... make sure to have a lot of fun with them? :P

The hardware and software limitations should be a part of the nice memory instead of something that can shatter them...here, think about it, do people even complain of lags or unpleasant gameplay due to bad hardware in the past? In some ways they do their job even better than the computers we have now, lol.

Yeah... most of the crankiness with retro games is the terrible IUI... well, in these games it doesn't matter quite so much... but in Strategy or tactics games... the UI is pretty important... and things have been made sooooo much better in the intervening years!

I loved the SNES. Zelda was great and Mario Kart. My friends played sooooo much contra and Super Metroid. Can you download other games onto this?

What’s the Secret Mana game? Is it an RPG?

Bummer there are no puzzle games on the system. Dr. Mario and Yoshi’s Cookie were great.

I never played Yoshi's Cookie... Doctor Mario, was that the Tetris clone?

Mario Kart... both a source of pleasure and scarred memories... I had a friend who was crazy competitive and would just rub everyone's faces in it if he won... of course, it was much funnier when he lost!

I'm not sure if I can get more games at the moment... it will be definitely something that I will be trying out after I exhaust the library here. Secret of Mana isn't something that I remember, I think it is a Zelda like game... but I"m not totally sure.

Yoshi’s cookie and Dr. Mario are both puzzle games. They are Tetris-ish but waaaaaay better. Two of my faves. 😁

Thanks for the support!

Those are all the bedt snes games. I bought an nes version with 600. Many repeats and only a few good ones.

yeah we've had here NES cartridges with many like 10k - 50k games :)
many many repeats :D
and sometimes no good games...

600 games.... I can't really remember many NES games that I really liked... maybe Ninja Turtles?

F-Zero, Link to the Past, Super Metroid???? oh wow, great stuff and great memories. enjoy that.

It is some pretty cool stuff! I can't wait to introduce my kids to the primitive past!

I sometimes worry about getting one of these machines because i have (in the past) returned to a game that I really really enjoyed in the 80's and 90's and after like 10 minutes I was like... this is lame.... I hope that doesn't happen here, because almost all of those games are just legendary in my mind.

Yeah... that's why I've not touched some of the older PC games that are re-releasing... I had a go at the original X-Com to try out a mod... the UI was terrible and I gave up in frustration...

That's a fun gift. MarioKart rocks. Also loved Secret of Mana and FFIII. Of course it's a shame the system isn't able to be upgraded to expand into adding all the other wonderful games the SNES is capable of playing. My brother and I would have never gotten an SNES if it weren't for the release of the original Mortal Kombat.

Oh... I forgot about Mortal Kombat... that was awesome!

Punch out!! Atill got my Nes and Snes!! Kept an old school tv too so my daughter gets the full real experience when she is old enough to play! Awesome and thanks for sharing!!

I never played Punch Out on the original... I would always see it playing at stores (or in arcades?)... but never bought the game, and so never got to experience it! I can't believe you kept an CRT TV! With all the fuzzies... the black and white signals from the cosmic background radiation from the Big Bang (well, some of it...) and the test patterns!

Something to be said about the old school stuff for sure! Thanks ago brother!!

We've had have great times with my brother, during the 90's with our NES and SNES from time to time from a friend ;)
Now, because of my nephew, there is WII :) and this will be our second Christmas playtime all together :)
NINTENDO RULEZ! :)

Some of my favorite games are actually from SNES... like for example: Donkey Kong Country 2, almost all marios, Top Gear 3000, All Star Wars... and can't remember the rest, but we were crazy :D
Although I started my virtual journey back in the 80's with all kinds of 8 bit computers...
I've even almost learned basic programming and made some own games :D

You have a WII?! How is it... it is a generation that I skipped... although, alot of the games seem to be porting over to the Switch.

I worry that some of the great old games might not have aged so well though....

My brother has bought one last Christmas...and I've played before with some friend's one...
There are many new games... and it's a lot of fun...
NINTENDO spirit is ON and my nephew goes crazy with this...
Very very awesome moments to play with 2-3 people wireless...
and it is like fitness! ;)

  • there're a lot of the old games to play with just the stick... like the old video games :)
some WII come hacked and you can install everything there ;)

I have one of those too! Nostalgia for sure. Mario cart is great for the quick game with friends over some pizza and beers.

Yep... I can't wait to play Mario Kart with my oldest daughter... the current Switch version is fun, but there is a bit too much help with the driving from the computer....
