Steem Basic Income Giveaway (Sleep....)

in #powerhousecreatives5 years ago

Thanks to everyone who tried to give an answer for the "What defines you" post from last week. It was a tricky question, and one that I always try to answer for myself as it is quite caught up in how happy we tend to be with ourselves and our current lot in life! There were lots of interesting answers!

Anyway, onwards to the next curious question! As a parent (which is not really a new experience...), I have come to the horrible acceptance that my sleep patterns are not really within my total control. I learnt much more about natural sleep patterns over the last year or so, and there are interesting ideas that our current "un-natural" way of a long sleep in the night is not really that normal for us. However, to do otherwise doesn't really fit into the modern world so much!

Also, I've been reading about studies of night shift workers and those who change rapidly between night and day shifts and how that really impacts health... so, all of this has led me to wonder how other people's sleep patterns are in comparison to mine!

My Question

  1. What are your sleeping habits/patterns/preferences? Are you a deep sleeper? A napper?

My sample answer

Unsplash

I am definitely more a morning person than a night owl, and I've always suffered quite heavily if I didn't get my eight hours of nightly sleep! However, I've always been able to nap pretty much anywhere if I'm tired, plane, train, car, floor... mid rehearsal.... I get woken easily by the sunrise, and I'm a pretty light sleeper in general!

So... since I've had kids, I've had pretty much constantly interrupted nights, although, that has taken a turn for the better in the last few months! Both our kids were terrible sleepers as babies, and the older one took ages (until around 4..) before she stopped waking us up in the night! Adding in the fact that if I'm touring with work, I tend to be lucky if I get 6 hours of sleep before travelling and moving on towards the next town.

Which means that my sleep patterns until very recently have been broken nights, with a nap in the daytime (which usually means that I end up sleeping later in the evening... which means getting a shorter night... rinse and repeat!). These naps are generally about 20-30 minutes and really could happen anywhere (by choice! I'm not that far gone yet!). If I'm at home, it will be on the bed or on the couch while the kids are playing... if I'm touring, it will be in the green room before the concert, or perhaps on the bus or plane!

Which did lead to a slightly funny situation last month. Just before a concert, the local paper had sent out a photographer to take shots of the musicians in the backstage before the concert. There were various people doing make-up or practicing or reading... and there was one of me asleep with my head on a desk! Interestingly enough, it didn't make the cut!

Rules

  1. Upvote if you want, it increases the payout and then I can hopefully sponsor more people.
  2. Resteem is NOT neccessary, but the more people see this, the more the people will be likely to be sponsored.
  3. In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
  4. I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
  5. I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!

Steem Basic Income

One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!

With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!

Last week's winners

The last post paid out 0.009 SBD and 2.849 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 3 shares.

The winners by random draw are:

When I was a kid I used to sleep like a rock nothing would wake me up but now much older I have became a light sleeper in the sense not so loud noises can wake me up but undisturbed I sleep well. So I'am still generally a good sleeper and prefer to wake up early even if I can be abit of a night owl..that is if I let myself became one, as I feel I would miss out on too many hours in the morning if I done that.

Sounds similar to me, although it sounds like you are disciplined about your bed time than I am... But it is the only time that I generally have for myself!

I live in Argentina, (GMT-3) and teach English online to Chinese. Shanghai, for example, is GMT+8, a total of 11 hours difference.

This means I have to do much of my work between 3am and 5am local time, which plays merry hob hell with my sleep patterns. This is compounded by the fact that local custom is to eat dinner around 8-9pm rather than the normal 6-7pm of most working Americans

Mostly, I try to nap in the afternoons, but it doesn't always work.

It sucks, but it pays the bills.

Wow, that is some messed up sleeping hours! Do you do the teaching one on one? Over a video link?

No, mostly I have to teach the students in groups, but yeah, with a webcam.

The pay isn't really all that great, either. But given that Argentina is in a deep, deep financial crisis at the moment, and I see people literally eating out of the trash cans every day, I count myself one of the lucky ones. Thanks for the reply :)

Hope things get better down there... I didn't know that Argentina was also suffering economically as well.

Whooaah Thank you @bengy!

Talking about my sleeping patterns...🤔
Luckily I don't need much sleep, I'm telling because since my back I need to get up at 4.30 daily before work to start doing excercises. No problem at all with that, but when I set the alarm 15 minutes earlier i'm sleepy for the rest of the time that day. My day ends at 0.00 or at least I try to. Otherwise I have the same feeling the next day when the alarm rings at 4.30, it does feels lik 4.15 then. That is my pattern at working days, only the weekends I try to give myself some addon with bonus hours of sleep. But still a morning person like you, so I'd prefer to get up early around 7.30/8.00 and wake-up behind a mug of coffee and read the newspaper.

Habbits during those hours of sleeping, I really don't know... I'd prefer to fall asleep at my side and I know that I'm sleeping very very deep. Once at my girlfriend her place they had a heist with an explosion. it was underneath the house of my girlfriend but we both didn't hear anything. On my way to work we did hear it on the news and the roommates at my girlfriend her place did all wake up except for us 😅

Can't believe your picture didn't make it in the papers! But it must be awesome to fall asleep that easily everywhere. Wish I could do it that easily.

Oh you know... there were probably more glamourous shots of other people, shots that didn't involve drooling out the side of your mouth?... it's all about how good looking you are!

I am stunned... 4 hours (well, okay about 4 and half hours!) of sleep! I think I would die! Well, if you can sleep through an explosion, I guess you could sleep through the Dutch New Year! Our oldest child sleeps like a log, there were fireworks going off right outside her room when she was smaller, and she just slept through it all... there was also the time I locked her in the car, and she fell asleep... and I couldn't wake her (shaking the car... smashing on the window)!

It ain't the looks for sure, the picture is all about the story it tells! ;)

Feels like I need to tell again before people think I can live with four hours of sleep!😜 Four hours I can't make, really need the four and a half otherwise I'm broken at the end of a week. Those 30 minutes extra are really important!

If I would I can sleep through all the fireworks at our New Years eve indeed. Did it once while I was recovering from a surgery. Didn't had the mood to participate the party with the family downstairs 😅

What would people say when they see you shaking the car and knocking the windows and they see your daughter🤣

Some people were considering calling the police... crazy guy shaking a car and screaming through the closed window....

Ordinarily I would have let her sleep... but I needed to pick up the young one from daycare, adn my wife needed the car for work!

That does sound logic 🤔 Did they talk to you before considering calling the police?😉

Yes, thankfully yes! It would be pretty crappy end to an embarrassing situation if I was arrested!

Aww, sleep. Zzzzzzzz

What? Oh! Yes, where were we? I wasn't sleeping. Just resting my eyes. I swear!

In the world of dreams, I am often caught in that strange spiral reality of repetitious reality, a bit like Bill Murry's Groundhog's Day. Each time the dream has a kink in the seams, and as much as one attempts to fix it, some things are just bound to happen again no matter what new choices are made. It can drive a person so mad, they might wake up suddenly in fit of rage, only to find themselves slipping back into sleep to continue the same pattern exactly where they left off.

How much sleep is enough sleep? Rip Van Winkle (story spoilers) met some ghosts in the woods, drank some of their liquor, and then slept for 20 years, and for it he avoided being drafted into a bloody war that cost thousands of lives. Of course, he also discovered some other not so nice changes occurred. His grew a long gray beard. His dog had disappeared (died presumably). He missed the childhood of his children as they were now grown adults. And finally his wife had died, although he claimed that wasn't such a big loss.

20 years of life, gone! The average amount of sleep in a person's lifetime (75 years old, 7 hours of sleep a day), is 25 years. That's a lot of lost life to live!

A special gene mutation, known as the DEC2 mutation, exists in some humans. These uncanny X-Men have the rare ability to sleep on average for about 4 hours, waking up alive, alert, and wide awake without suffering any of the debilitating physical and mental drawbacks that others might suffer to their health on so little sleep. While the rest of the world sleeps, these mutants are liberated to live a second lifeline, and an alternate personality is often born. They often must find some solitary activity to occupy their time and work while their friends and family members are imprisoned in slumber.

Perhaps they are not the mutants. Perhaps we are! In ancient times, people slept according to the daylight hours. People often had three separate sleep cycles in a day. One at the onset of night. A waking period, monks often called Vigils, where they would sing and offer prayers to God. Another sleeping period until dawn. A final brief ciesta in the mid-day. The bio-rhythms of the body were more naturally adapted and evolved from the changes of the sun and moon. Once the light-bulb was invented, the habit of an extended sleep period became the new norm forever.

Personally, I am a very heavy, long sleeper, often feeling lethargic throughout the day, with the exception of evenings when I become a night owl filled with energy and creative thoughts. Waking me in the early hours, awakens the monster inside of me, including my toxic dragon breath. It is strange for me to be awake too early, when it is still dark, and I develop an odd mental state in which I seem to hate everyone around me, perhaps because my blood vessels feel like they are swollen with cotton and bleach. I cannot do complex math and memorization. Without coffee, it may take three more hours to fully feel restored from this strange state of mind, and I may even find myself falling back asleep uncontrollably before the early afternoon. Some food and drink at lunch usually restores me to back to normalcy.

So instead, I choose to go to bed late, and sleep in late, allowing myself the full luxury of rest and dreams. Once I develop that feeling of loss of balance, slurred speech, slower brain function, headache, or droopy eyelids, I know I'm ready to crash for the night. It allows me to recover the most quickly in the morning. Although, physically getting myself fully awake and onto my feet is still a bit of challenge if there is no motivation and responsibility to do anything of importance in the day.

When mom and dad used to tuck us in at night to make us feel good about ourselves and the coming day before we went to sleep, perhaps that has more benefit to our daily health than we realize.

Wow! What a reply! I learnt a whole heap of new things from you! (when the post pays out, I will register a SBI share as a bonus for you!)

Anyway, I get your need for coffee in the morning... I'm not sure if it is just ingrained habit or if it is a real thing... but if I don't get that morning coffee, I'm cranky and I will get a splitting headache! I wish I could go to sleep late and not expect to be woken up early by kids... or worse, in the middle of the night! Sigh, those days are long past me...

I defy any semblance of what is considered normal. When I was a kid I was a total night owl. Especially during summer break.
When I would fall asleep on a normal schedule I would wake up at 1, 3 and 5. That has happened most of my life. Now thanks to drugs, I wake every time I roll over LOL. I really need to get back on Melatonin it did help me develop a pattern after coming off of overnights.

I find I sleep better during the day, so overnights worked well, the only thing is everything thinks you're off during the day you can run errands, um nope...I am sleeping. I never got to spend time with anyone which was worse.

So now I'm pretty regular, I do wake up everytime I roll over ( a part of the body hurting and gone numb) . I nap on the weekends, I sleep better during the day then at night. Yeah my sleep is a mess LOL .

Wow, that is a pretty messed up sleep schedule! It must suck to wake up so often, are you wise awake or just dozy awake?

It's different each time. I have to lay there for a few to see if I fall back asleep or not. Today for instance, woke up at 5am I was drowsy thought I could doze back off, I finally got out of bed right around 7 the whole time I spent laying there trying to just focus on breathing and relax. LOL then I got tired of laying there.

Who knows at this point. I just try not stress over it. As my husband puts it 'Sleep when you can.'

I have suffered from insomnia at some time and it is very unpleasant to spend the day sleepy.
I currently sleep well, all night, I dream a lot, sometimes I remember what I dreamed and sometimes I do not. I am struck by people I do not know in everyday life and appear in my dreams sometimes with mysterious messages. I have learned the correct form of some words because I have dreamed of that. I also keep in writing some messages that have impacted me. I still do not get over my amazement about what happens to us when we sleep.
I used the google translator, I apologize for any mismatch.
Saludos

No problems, I understand it!

Insomnia, one of the other commenters also has that. I would have to say, that must be one of the most debilitating things. I would hate to be feeling tired and a bit fuzzy for the day, and then not be able to sleep again...

I was born to be a farmer up between 4-6am every day of my life! For most my life I would get about 5-6 hours a night rest. I realized many years ago, someone said to me about the word "sleep" is a very curious one for our consciousness, it is as if we program ourselves to check out, and when we "sleep" we give our power away in the mere meaning of the word. I started using the word rest, re-energize, regenerate, reboot, relax, the state of resting and replenishing. It changed things, now I really listen to my body as I have entered my what I like to say as my"men on pause" stage I'm resting more than ever and force myself to go to bed earlier. Another aspect of my deeper longer rests are 2 factors that have changed the ball game in terms of deep and theta states, when I toss and turn or have fire body, I literally start ohming and toning and immediately fall back to deep rest. When I awake I do at least 20 minutes to an hour again before I arise and this brings me into such clearer frequencies for my mind and body. I also have added a 1:1 ratio CBD/THC oil tincture to my daily/nightly routine, this has allowed rarer fire sweats and no body aches/clear mind in mornings. For anyone that is suffering with insomnia I highly recommend finding a full plant CBD product not just from hemp. The key is being consistent and finding the combo/strains for you and your needs. Reflexology in the feet can relax the entire body and help with deeper rest as well. Health is Wealth... Rest well Stemians!

Wow, up before the crack of dawn! I don't think that would be the life for me, although, I guess once it is your routine, then you don't mind so much?

Sorry to hear about this "fire sweat"? I'm not sure what it is, but I hope that the treatment goes some part into being able to surmount this problem!

fire sweat mean's I can power a city block with the sweat pouring off my body, when having a "hot flash" it's insane, somenights I have to change my pillowcase and I always have a towel next to me, they are better now I'm using CBD oil at night..... yeah, crazy too I like the night time so sometimes I'll run on 3 to 4 hours of rest...

After the sexual satisfaction I tend to fall asleep immediately and only by force I am brought back into the awake state again.
I am rather the sleeper. Once I am awake, I am banged up.

...umm okay!

I am a person who doesn't sleep much because it is hard to sleep long!!
I am the night owl of my family, active during night but not that much in the day. I try to nap but have been successful only a few times.

So, you are the only one awake... in the quiet hours of the night! Imagine all the mischief that you could get up to!

Haha true!
