Ertwensoep
Okay, so I've mentioned before that the Dutch aren't particularly known for their food culture. However, there are a few things that are really good here that are worth mentioning. This is essentially a Pea Soup, but it has a Dutch twist that just makes it lekker! It is the perfect winter meal, and it is a pretty solid dish on it's own.
So, the photo from above is a good indication of what to expect. I made one last night, but left it in the cooker a bit too long so it was pretty thick! However, if you keep an eye on the soup, you can expect one very easy winter meal. Just whack it in the slow cooker in the morning, and by dinner time you have a hearty meal waiting to warm you from the cold. Plus, there is nothing better than walking in the door to the smell of a nice dinner and no need to cook!
INGREDIENTS
500 grams of split peas
8 cups of water
2 onions
3 celery sticks (or better a chunk of celeriac)
3 large carrots
bacon
salt and pepper
Rookwurst (This is the Dutch smoked sausage, I wouldn't normally eat it but it is great in this soup, probably you could add a smoked sausage of your own choice in here)
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
- Open bag of split peas, dump it in slow cooker.
- Cut the vegetables, dump them in the slow cooker.
- Slice the meat, bigger chucks are okay. Dump them in the slow cooker.
- Salt and Pepper to taste.
- Take the water, dump in slow cooker.
- (Optional) You can pretty much toy around and add almost anything else for a different taste. Experiment at your own risk!
- Slow cook for around 8 hours on low (I did 10 yesterday, and it was pretty thick...).
That's it, super easy and surprisingly tasty. Most importantly, dinner ready when you walk in the door!
