SHOW ME YOUR CREATIVITY / Who is this boy?

A Picture is Worth One Thousand Words

I used one of my old paintings as a starting point, then I digitized it and added other photographic and design elements. I had no preconcieved idea about who the boy I was depicting, only that he was from a rural farm area.

As I looked at the final image I remembered my wife once telling me she was more frightened of lonely country roads than urban streets. It made me wonder what kind of story my picture could illustrate and who this boy could possibly be.

So try this for fun, reply with one or two sentences describing Jeremiah and his circumstances.

To give you some direction here are a few examples I wrote.

  1. Jeremiah was the eldest son of the Reverend Bishop. Deacon Fryer told the organist Jeremiah was a bit odd but it wasn't likely he was going to hurt anyone. The Deacon's daughter Ramona was up late that night looking out her bedroom window, Jeremiah was standing out by the road.

  2. Jeremiah sleeps where his grandfather died. When his grandfather was alive Jeremiah stole money from his wallet. He put all the money in jars and hide them deep in the crawl space. Jeremiah's mother always complained they were poor.

  3. Jeremiah is rude and unkept, is always working a chaw of tobacco. When he goes into town he delights in spitting on the sidewalks. When he enters the diner people are eager to leave. Jeremiah sits alone and orders black coffee. As he flips through the paper his hands are encrusted with grime. When he gets to the business section he studies investments.

Sort:

Jeremiah dreamt of Africa. His grandparents had crossed the ocean and built up a small farm, from sawn lumber and hard work, and their first house now lay rotting half a mile back from the new place. Jeremiah spent summer afternoons studying the old books they'd left behind, imagining the animal dangers that waited in his grandfather's abandoned fields, and the beautiful girl who would, somehow, come to rescue him.

Hey, I like that African connection and also the expectation of romance.

Evacuated from the city, Jeremiah had escaped the raging red fires of his bombed street for the tranquil crimson sunsets of his new life in the countryside.

Yes, lets title it, "War and Peace."
