FOOD PRESERVATION
We all eat and need food to survive and stay alive hence food is any substance that we eat to make us healthy. We get the raw materials that we use in processing our food from the farm, river and forest. Examples of food from the farm are rice, potatoe, plantain, etc. Food from river includes sea animals like fish, crabs, oysters, etc. Food from forest are bush animals that can be eaten as meat.
Have you ever put your cooked or raw food in the fridge before? That means you have preserved food before. Food preservation is that process of keeping your food safe over a period of time. We preserve our food so that it will not spoil quickly.
FIVE WAYS OF PRESERVING FOOD
There are several ways of preserving food but I will be discussing only five ways which includes:
CANNING:
I am sure you have purchased tin food before. Canning is the process of preserving food in a sealed container after you heat process the food. One popular food that can be preserved this way is tomato. Below is a section of canned food in a super market.
REFRIGERATION:
This the of preserving food in a fridge or freezer. To use this method you need constant power supply to keep the refrigerator cool always.
SALTING:
This is the act of sprinkling salt on your food to prevent it from spoiling. Salt is a chemical that contain sodium chloride which works for preservation of food.
DRYING:
Drying is that act of removing liquid in a substance. Drying can be done using the sun, smoke or fire.
STEAMING:
Steaming is the process of cooking food on low heat to preserve it from spoiling.
THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE PERISHABLE FOOD
Perishable foods are foods that can easily decay or decompost, a good example of perishable food is fresh tomatoes.
For me, the best way of preserving perishable food is refrigeration as my first choice then steaming as second.
My reasons for saying refrigeration is the best way of preserving foods are:
Canned foods usually contain high amount of dissolved salt which is harmful to our body tissues.
Excess intake of salt can lead to bloating or swelling of the body parts especially in people that have kidney problem.
In drying the quality of the food will reduce and there is high risk of contamination.
CONCLUSION
Eating freshly cooked food is better and healthier than eating preserved food beacause the chemicals in preserved food is not good for the body especially when it is consumed regularly.

Hello @beevicsam, you have written so well on this and I have learnt a valuable lesson, I will try to curtail my intake of can foods, because it is harmful to the body.
