unrecognised opportunities

the lonely melancholy of her eyes
matched by the heart rending depth of her sighs
filled the space with the pain of unrequited love

he talked of money and his ambition
his pride in how much he was worth was undeniable
and his face was bright, alive, his joy clearly recognizable
and this was eclipsed in his eagerness as his eyes shine in his anticipation
of how much was yet to come his future was exceptional

she listened
she gazed adoringly
and her constant hope in her mind soft with tenderness
of wishing his eyes would shine in eagerness
in the thought of seeing her again

she thought he was her soulmate
and had given herself to him in the past
her love ran deep and had each day amassed
the hope that he would see it too
his love for himself and his money had in fact
surpassed anything she could have forecast

after years of hoping and wishing of feeling unhappy through and through
she decided enough was enough, to move on, to live another life more appealing,
she wouldn't ever stop loving him, caring for him, she knew that to be true
but to love requires no conditions, no requirements, no rules, to simply love is a feeling
and did not have to endure lack of respect and awkward dates that held no healing

you cannot help who you fall for
you cannot control how they feel about you
so when love is unrequited
believe there is something better for you
